That's AWFUL! It's one thing to know a relative is terminally ill and have time to prepare yourself mentally for the inevitable. It's an entirely different--and far more tragic--thing to have it literally come out of the blue!

Perhaps he had some sort of congenital defect that was never diagnosed?
