Not mine, but I know the seller--a stand-up guy who is a true fan of lugged steel and would un-doubtedly have taken good care of this frame. I have two of his ex-frames and they are in great condition.

The down tube is bent in a way that is consistant with a front end impact,
so whether or not the owner is a "stand up" guy, that frame looks crashed.
Buyer beware!!!!!!

Yes, he got it from Lou.

I also had a concern about the ripple, but couldn't see it well enough in the pics to appreciate how bad it is. I don't think he's trying to mis-lead anyone, he didn't tell me if the ripple happened while he had it. I'm sure he would fully disclose all he knows if you asked him. He also got some quotes for restoration and would pass those along.

This frame has been owned by the famous Lou Deeter three times and the less than famous Mrs. JG once. It was my wife who took the digger that caused the ripple.

Here is my other Baylis--link above.

The ripple on the black one was fully disclosed to Todd before he bought it. I priced it at what I thought it was worth less $1000 which is the estimate to have the tube replaced and repainted by Brian Baylis. That seemed reasonalbe to me and him. If the buyer wanted to, I have no doubt they could ride it as is, inspect the ripple frequently, then send it off for repair when it starts to deteriorate. Chroming of the headlugs would probably add a little more if the buyer wanted to do that as chroming has become expensive in SoCal. I had it built for 6 months after the accident and rode it several times with no problems. Lou

I think to ride a bike with a big ripple you'd need to drink some ripple. Whoever is the lucky buyer should send it back to BB and have it fixed right. And while the buyer is at it I'd have him paint it back the original eggplant which was an amazing color that a previous owner had removed. This was a nice bike.

The listing doesn't say anything about the TT, but in my experience a head-on impact can also over-stress the TT just aft of the lug. I just continued to ride mine (lugged mid-'80s Trek) and eventually the DT failed near the shifter bosses.

the bike is located in mechanicsburg, pa? what was the so cal reference about chroming?

IIRC there was no indication of impact behind the lug on the TT.

Brian Baylis is in So Cal and probably uses a local plater.

From a pure safety standpoint, the downtube should be replaced. There was no damage that I saw anywhere else. I rode this bike before it was damaged and after it was damaged and it rode fine. My other Baylis also rides fine, nothing wrong with the ride of a Baylis. I believe that environmental standards in California, where Brian lives, are much more stringent than the rest of the country and therefore the price for rechroming the lower headlug after a torch is taken to it might push up the price a bit, but I'm not sure how much. It is a beautiful bike. I agree with Jonathan that the original eggplant was gorgeous, but the gold pinstriping on the gloss black is nice too. Lou

This frame is now repaired--downtube was replaced. Repainted in triple chocolate (headtube, brake bridge, chainstay bridge, and bb shell shell are dark chocolate). I've since changed the wheels and tires. But, I thought you would like to see this frame in its third paint scheme. It began live as eggplant, then gloss black with nice gold pinstriping, now triple chocolate with red lug lining. Lou

Maybe because it was 3 years old.

I love the new chocolate look. The wheels seem a little out of place on it.
