my friend niki attempted an hour record at kissena velodrone in queens a couple months ago. he averaged 25mph, not great but pretty amazing for a skinny young vegan. pretty bad a$$ ATMO.

there's piks here if your interested:

On THAT track impressive and way to swoop in on a first...that's very cool. Congratulations.

As someone who does their fair share of 40km TT's on the road...

What was he thinking!!?! :)

That's a very tough mental challenge!

it's not a fast track by any means...but you're right that is super slow.

It looks pretty exposed to wind/weather, so I can see how a rider would have that with which to contend.

The Kissena track has tons of racing history.
I haven't been there in years, it looks freshly paved. I didn't see any potholes.

BTW the photos on the flikr link were taken with a Leica M8. That was a little surprising to me.

if the rider hasn't really trained to spend that much time on their own,
rolling in circles with nothing to focus on except their suffering,
it's a hard mental challenge. With the right preparation, it makes all the
difference.

That was my first cross race. The promoters (mtb guys) thought the new guys should race an hour. It was a ton of fun, but I don't think there was much racing.

By my calculation it puts him just shy of the twentieth century. A little behind Willie Hamilton's record of 1898.

But for an ordinary vegan Joe on the Kissena track that's real good. Makes Oscar Egg all the more amazing.

word. Within 15 minutes, it becomes just another ride.
The best part of racing is learnin' something about yourself.
Being able to keep your threshold for an hour isn't something
the average recreationally fit cyclist is prepared for.

Even doing a few sets of 8-10 minutes could be an eye opener
for a first timer.

Fixed;
Kissena was built in the early '60s, for the Olympic trials of 1964 .
Over the years, it deteriorated quite a bit and got a reputation as a
bumpy weed grown slow and dangerous track, but it was all the local racers
had here and they used the heck out of it.
Last year the city finally re-did the surface and upgraded the stands (they did a nice job)
This was after much lobbying and behind the scenes work by local racers
and the Kissena club.
The track is now much better and there is racing every week during the season:

I think a 24hr record attempt on a track would require the rider to be
an experienced track rider to deal with the angles and turns.

VF, just 1 mile from the Kissena 'drome

I'm not a track racer and I don't do time trials -- haven't done one since 1981 or so, and that was on a standard road bike somewhere in New Hampshire -- so I don't mean any disrespect to the rider for pushing himself in a way I don't know how to do, but I think that a plausible attempt requires both a different track and a different human being. Body chemistry or not, there has to be a different body turning the pedals.

I would LOVE to have access to a facility for an hour!

I didn't think it was serious hour record attempt, just some Kissena fun. He had to know that he wasn't going to go over 50 km/h.

would love to see someone do a 24 hour record there.

Bingo :) It takes more than imagination to do what he did.

Seems like a solid ride to me. Unpredictable outdoor conditions. Just one person against the clock. An hour is a LONG time to sustain 25 mph all by one's lonesome! Good job, Niki!

I've never averaged 25 on any ride. for him to do it for an hour at any age is awesome. Great job!

How was if officiated? Doesn't he need a more standard track bike with the new UCI rules? DO they still keep track of attempts with "other" bikes? Love the idea. I'm close enough that I have to come by. I didn't know they did a resurface so now it looks like I need to put together a track bike this off season;-)
