How low do you guys go for tubs, and for clinchers. Compton's mechanic said on cyclingnews.com that if you don't hit the rim every now and then your not low enough(he'd have to be talking about tubs). what say you guys?

I run the highest of anyone I race with that I know of. I'm 6'1" 170lbs and I like at least 50 psi. Last weekend was a dry sandy course, I ran 55-60psi and thought it was perfect (clinchers).

I did a race on some mostly hard pack grass on Sunday at 70psi. The only loss of grip was on some gravel-ly uphill sections that I don't think less pressure would have done much to help.

How much more effort is needed to overcome the rolling resistance at 45psi or so??.... I had mine set that low for a practice lap and they felt unnecessarily spongy so I opted for higher pressure.

there was a long straight (few hundred yards) along the MS river that I know I was a good amount faster with higher pressure.

Weighing at 150lbs, I range from 25psi on muddy, off camber and/or bumpy courses to 30-35psi on hardpack terrain especially if there are roots and rocks.

If the course is an absolutely mud laden, I will go under 25psi accordingly.

Mind you these pressures are with Griffo CX 32's with both treads facing forwards.

I weigh 155#. I run my tubulars (FMB SSC 34s) at 25 psi in the front and 28 psi in the rear. I run my clinchers (Mud 2s) at 30-35 psi. I was running the tubulars at around 30 psi to start. Night and day in the corners after I dropped a few psi. I agree with Chris that most people run their tubulars too hard.

Cyclingnews.com featured Katie Compton's Spike Shooter Primus Mootry (http://www.cyclingnews.com/tech/2007/probikes/?id=katie_compton_spike_shooter07) today. In the write-up, her "manager/mechanic/husband" Mark Legg seyz... "If you don't feel the rim every now and then, you're running them too high." Seems to work ok for her.

"most people run too high pressure in their cross tires"Agree 100%. Same thing with mountainbike tires as well. Modern tires can handle the greater stress of lower pressures fine.

Echoing recent sentiment...I heart this forum. Good stuff.

I just wish knowing what pressure to run your tubulars at = good racing tactics and sense. That would have helped me more on Sunday. :crap:

Thanks Guys,

I've been running mine kinda low in training and just playing around. I don't get over 35lbs. I ride a paved trail about 3 miles to my training site so I wish sometimes I had more air. When I rode my mtb a lot I always told my pals they use too much air. I found out that it's hard to have any authority on these issues when everybody is faster than you.
