View Full Version : Grifo Tubular Question

I have a Challenge tubular that I inherited. It seemed to lose air quickly, as in a noticeable amount overnight. I thought it had a puncture of some sort, but now I read that some tubulars have thin latex tubes that air pretty much passes right through. Is that the case here? Should I just reglue it and ride (I pulled it off, yeah, I'm impulsive).

Thanks, jimbo

The Grifos I have had in the past have lost 15-20 psi over night, which is noticable considering I would ride them at 30 psi. Same thing with my FMBs. The latex tubes are quite permeable.

The Challenges sometimes come with the valve core and stem not all the way tightened together. Snug'em up!

What problems have you had with the road tires? I don't want to jinx myself but I've had good luck with them (Criterium and Elites).

my limited experience says it may be the valve core. For whatever reason there seem to be inconsistancies in how they seal. I know people will (or already) think I am nuts but a core will seal fine in one tire and not in another-different brand. I keep a supply of Vittoria cores and some of them will not seal with Tufo valve extenders. I am suspicious of all things Tufo but 3 of 4 worked fine.

A quick word of advise (probably bad) to tubular riders who use valve extensions, also carry a piece of teflon tape as well as an extra extension. I have talked to some who don't realize the spare's valve will not be long enough and the teflon tape that is already on the flatted tire may be destroyed. Just a thought.

PARIS ROUBAIX (nero). Ick ick ick. I found them to be quite fragile in contrast to what they were intended for. Trust me I did my level best to make them work however after repairing front and rear than having the rear shred while riding a gravel trail I ride everyday and never had a prob. I called it quits.

I'm not much of a gravel road guy but have put maybe 10k on various sets of Elites and Criteriums (had a cheap source) without major problems (a couple bootable cuts that I reckon would have happened with most tires). Wear seems ok for fairly light tires with a good ride. No one else I know has these tires or knows anything about them, so I was interested in your take.
