I am building up a cross bike. I am not a cross racer, but I plan on getting into it. This bike will be used primarily for rain riding and a cross race here and there. Even though I know tubulars are better, because this is an all arounder I am going to use clincher.

Can anyone recommend a tire for the above purposes? It can be a cross specific tire, but I was thinking one of the skinnier ones. Although, heck, I don't really know - I am new to this - that is why I am asking you guys. Thanks.

There is no reason to use the same tires for races and rain rides, unless your rain rides are on trails.

If you want a tyre that will do everything kinda OK ( and not wear out in 10 minutes), then I vote Ritchey speedmax.

Not too slow on the road, not too scary on the trails.

But there are much better tyres suited to the individual application.

you need two sets of tires. one set for road and another set for off

700x35 Paselas might do it for you.

The 35 paselas are comfy and fun, but they feel slower on the road than the ritchey speedmax. They are scary off-road if the trails are not perfect. Too dry and dusty or too damp and they are plain scary.

On my commutocross, I run Michelin Dynamic 28's for pavement and nice dirt/gravel trails. If it's going to be rougher (like deeper gravel on trails) then I use Speedmax 30's. Different conditions = different tires.

I use Pasela 32's on my around town fixie, and I quite like them.
