Handmade Exhibitor Numbers Up

SPEEDWAY, IN (BRAIN)—The North American Handmade Bicycle Show is gaining in popularity with 92 exhibitors already registered.

This is only 11 short of last year's total of 103. Booth space sales are already close to the '07 figure of 130, and with seven weeks of registration remaining it is possible that all 200 booth spaces might sell out. Exhibitor registration closes Dec. 15, 2007. This year's show is in Portland, Oregon, Feb. 8-10.

As the show continues to grow in size and status, Walker
increasingly sees it as a venue for key manufacturers to reach their target audience.

"As a sponsorship vehicle, the show provides a two-fold opportunity. First of all, it is a place for the more upscale manufacturers to engender some brand loyalty-afterall, people just love this show and those that help provide it. Secondly, NAHBS is a unique opportunity for people like component manufacturers to connect with the handmade bicycles industry to find out the innovative ways
their components are being used-uses that the large scale
manufacturers would never conceive. These are the flagship display bicycles for component makers."

So...yeah...Who's going? Which days? (so the local knows when we'd have the greatest concentration of possible attendees?)

I had the pleasure of both meeting Shinomaster and seeing the guy in the thong this afternoon. He (thong guy) was in costume as a "muff diver". His costume consisted of a thong, a helmet, cycling shoes, and "MUFF DIVER" written across his back in grease pencil. There were two other people in this same, extraordinarily creative costume....both women in furry black bikinis. One of them was probably over six feet tall. I was standing at the base of the big climb/runup during the women's race, and at one point the tall one stopped, walked over, grabbed my beer, drank the remaining 1/3 of a beer, said thanks, and punched me in the sternum. If I had a muff, I'd be in love.

Shino, I'd have to check on that restaurant of yours...they may or may not do gluten free. It would be funny if they didn't. Say what you will about French waiters or service, there wasn't any decent place in Paris that I went that they couldn't/wouldn't deal with the gluten-free requirement...they knew what it was and they provided safe food. I did have to ask what I could have, but I didn't have to explain what celiac was or issues with cross contamination.
But the French restaurants here? They're not French.

From Shino (in PM)
Capril's is great.
Papa Hayden's is supposed to be good (Italian)

I'm willing to work with any restaurant that we think we want to go to, but I'll say that it depends on where they get their food and how far they prep in advance and how the kitchen is run whether they care to work with someone who's celiac...

So winnow it down to a couple choices (on or off list) and I'll make some calls and do some digging on whether they'll work out or not.

Ginger
10-29-2007, 01:53 PM
This place is good too.
http://www.paleysplace.net/

Looking at this place it perhaps has a better possibility of feeding me without issue than nobel...(if you look at their site, they make a "paleybar" that is wheat free...)

I can get a pretty good feeling for a place's competency in dealing with cross contamination when I talk to them on the phone...and once I'm there if a server doesn't quite "get it" I have no problem being a terrible customer and trotting myself back to talk to the chef myself. Sometimes it turns out better that way.

I have to say that the problem with some of these Celiac web sites is that the people don't seem to go to too many more adventurous restaurants. It's such a pain if you're the very first celiac to cross the threshold and you wind up sick because the restaurant doesn't have a clue about how far the cross contamination issue extends...

Anyone familiar with how Meg Ryan ordered all her food in When Harry met Sally? I generally order last because I'm worse than that. But I have to be.

yeah, there's a place called the Lucky Labrador.

Here's my other comments in a random stream of consciousness. In this town, you gotta try really hard to get a bad Asian or Mexican meal, but you gotta work a bit to get good Italian food. There's plenty of mod/bistro/ecclectic/fushion stuff. You'll also find that prices are very good, much like San Francisco, but without the sales tax. My comments aren't directed at the get-together, but at food in general.

you gotta get a Spanish coffe at http://www.hubers.com/

Italian http://www.piazzaportland.com/ A really great family from Rome who do very simple food, but do it well. Moderately priced, great atmosphere. They can handle a large table 10-15, but not large groups

Cha Cha Cha. Not to be confused with the Santoria themed Haight Asburry restaurant in SFO. This is perhaps the best "cheap" mexican food whithin a short distance of venue. There's a couple of different locations. The one in the Pearl is accessable via trolly from the venue.

Gotham Tavern. Very good food, walking distance from the venue, priced very reasonably. http://www.gothamtavern.com/menu.html

Per Que No. http://www.portlandfoodanddrink.com/?p=94 In the Mississippi arts district which is certainly worth a stroll in it's own right. It's located just outside of walking distance from the venue. This not your typical Portland/East LA meets Tjuana taqueria. The place has it's own style and taste. Worth the effort.

Clark Lewis. http://www.ripepdx.com/ Very good, but not cheap. The kind of place I take my wife to recapture those dating days. Not a short walk, but indeed walking distance from the venue.

Pho Oregon. http://www.grubnow.com/cgi-bin/showmenu.cgi?xid=phooregon There's a lot of great Thai restaurants in town, in fact there's 3 of them that come to mind whithin walking distance from the venue. However, Thai is so played out. Portland has some of the best Vietnamese restaurants that I've ever tried. The one above has a solid menu from top to bottom and you'll laugh at how cheap it is when you get the bill. It's a well known hole in the wall and about a 10 minute drive, taxi ride, bus ride from the venue. The traditional Beef noodle soup is great, but dont stop there.

Fong Chong Grocery and the House of Louie. I mention these together because they both do the same thing about equally as well and are almost across the street from each other. Perhaps the best Hog Kong style Dim Sum on the West Coast. Not a dinner spot, but a lunch spot. Walking distance from the venue.

That's all for now.

Capril's is far away and not easy to get to unless you have a car. Papa Hayden's is run by criminals and isn't especially close either. The Corbett fish House is mediocre and far away.
I say we wait a month and get a real head count and figure it out then. Most of the places I jokingly tossed out as ideas are good but uber expensive and small. http://www.genoarestaurant.com/menu.html Ha ha..
It seems to me that a brew pub like Bridgeport or http://www.mcmenamins.com/ might be a more realistic option.

Nice to meet you too! I at first thought you were the repo-man coming to take away my Fuji.
Did that chick really do that? That is effing awsome.

Yeah that's a good idea. It's the only good Irish pub in town. All the Bostonians will feel right at home.

I havent been to Portland since 1999, but isnt there a great beer house and German restaurant somewhere in the industrial area (by the river)? Owned by the Widmere Brothers...

Had a great meal there and they have beer sampling and root beer sampling as well.

We could cab it there ( I am thinking of coming up in 2008).

Just a thought,

Steve

Portlanders are quite snobby about their haunts and Widmere is seen as a mass market craft brewer. With that said, Widmere still makes a very good wheat beer and the food's good and prices are in the typical brew pub range.

Let's do it.

We all have different ideas of what walking distance is. It's about 1 mile away.

I think in 1999 it was still considered a "local" place...I do remember that it was HARD to find, thats for sure!

Just a thought and yes, their wheat beer is great!!!

you know how it is, once a company starts growing up and spending some real $ on marketing, it's shunned as folks move on to the next new thing. it's a two mile cab ride from the venue.

funny thing this thread. not one person has mentioned getting together for a ride, but we sure have talked about food. Guilty as charged.

Mine is already for a trip and ride.... S&S works well in wet or dry

SPOKES only rides his in sun and dry so someone will have to loan him a 55cm is it is wet... ;)

I have found the "red" is an anti -rust solution. Come on down to RALEIGH and ride with SPOKES and I. Spokes has even been known to have a glass of red - but riding in the rain is not somethinig his bikes do.

See? That's what I thought.
