I was very fortunate to come across a good buy on a CSI earlier this year that had mostly 8 speed Record on it with the exception of a Phil Wood BB and Racing T FD, RD, and crankset. Unfortunately the CSI was too tall, but I ended up keeping the bits.

I thought it would be cool to try and complete the group with Record bits to put on my Club Special after it gets paint, but jiminy Christmas the money these bits are bringing is crazy. So, if you have any old 8 speed Record bits in good shape that you aren't using, there is a good market for them.

Those are crazy prices.

New old parts always bring top dollar, but even those prices are high.
The other thing is that Campagnolo rear derailleurs have always been
expensive in relation to other parts. Recently, a new record rear derailleur
was more money than a crankset or a brakeset. That's an odd valuation in
my books. A rear derailleur can't be more expensive to make than two
brakes, can it?

Anyway...
There are lots of lightly used parts out there, there are good deals to be
found on ebay if you're patient.

well Campy knows you can use another brand of brake but if you like Campy brifters they think you have to buy their pricey derailers, re-routing cables and j-Tek kludges not withstanding, hence the agressive pricing perhaps?

wow that is pretty crazy.

ebay "bid wars" can get pretty crazy. i think people figure it they've been wanting something and following an item for a week, they may as well pay whatever the hell they have to go win it.

grant is dead-on. those hard to find parts are worth lotsa coin.

i paid $229 for a Ti 9sp one in september.

And that one is a very, very hard model to find, Campy only made it for 1 year.
I'd been looking for one since my Sachs build plan started 4 years ago.

et al, consider the condition these are in. there are plenty of beat up 8 speed record derailleurs on eBay for dirt cheap. but who would want to buy something beat up and then have to sink more money into it and trying to track down the _parts_ for these things?

personally, these prices seem fair for these sorts of items in these conditions.

any guesses as to what this may end at?

likely even more if they were 172.5 instead of 170's

A couple of weeks ago, there was a 1st generation 1951 grand sport rear derailleur
on Ebay at over $5K. The auction ended early, the rumor that an offer of over
10 grand sealed the deal.

Take 20 percent off during their current sale and you have an older style NOS Centaur RD for $52.00. Its not Record, but for that kind of money, who cares.

GS auction (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=190163020817)

Looks like it went to the end, no? $6100. Stupid in any case...

What forums do those guys hang out on?

I am not in the right region (or maybe country) for that level of collecting. So, if you spend $6k on the RD, what kind of value would you estimate on a complete period correct bike? $50k?

Actually, I have a buddy that gave me an 8 speed Chorus FD, RD, and shifters that were in his old parts box for an modern Shimano rear wheel. To be fair the right shifter needs rebuilding and the RD is in average cosmetic condition, but it works. ;)

If anyone has a cheap rebuild kit for a rear 8 speed Chorus Ergolever, let me know.

I guess if you live in Japan, you convince yourself that everything is expensive!
