Could you knowledgeable folks explain what they are and how you use them? I remember atmo explaining that he varies between 90 and 110 rpms for 70 minutes, so I assumed he must do intervals of some sort (so perhaps he could chime in). Also, if rpms are the basis of some types of intervals, what kind of device does one use on the bike? I'm sure intervals can be guided by heart rate also.

Thanks.

doh it's like this - if you hit your thumb with a hammer
often enough it won't hurt as much. intervals raise the
bar wrt what kind of output you can sustain and how
frequently you can get in the coffin when the real
hammer drops at a race atmo.

Intervals: periods of intense effort (ON) interspersed with periods of PARTIAL recovery (OFF). The idea is to teach your body to adapt to racing stresses where hard efforts will not necessarily be followed by sufficient rest to bring the heartrate down to "normal" levels.

The ON can be characterised by increased cadence or gearing.

Vary the ON and OFF durations for variety or to suit the event you want to focus on.

Intervals differ from speed work in that speed work allows FULL recovery. For instance, you might practice a wind-up to top speed ending with a 200m sprint, then allow yourself 10min. in the small ring at 100bpm before you try another one.

plus, when you say it so it rhymes, it sounds kinda dirty.
what line are we talking about? The long one?

I've been mostly doing intervals in races, so far that hasn't produced too much in the way of good finishes. I question their value as a result of my own experience. Maybe my Fartlek pedal and cleat system is not up to snuff.

I don't know a lot of web sites that offer interval training information; all I've learned I've read in books, then applied on the road.

try here: http://roadbikerider.com/bt_excerpt.htm

Fred Matheny has a decades long history writing about cycling and his works are very easy to understand. He makes it simple. I recommend anything he writes.

If you want a little bit more analytical treatise on intervals, I recommend this book: http://www.amazon.com/Inside-Cyclist-Ed-Burke/dp/0941950069

The book is a series of articles Ed Burke wrote for VeloNews Magazine back in the late '70's/early '80's but it's just as applicable today. I still have my original, 1979 copy and refer to it.

Last, check out Velogear.com. Here's one I'd recommend.
