Any recommendations out there for a crank? I have a bike that
has 9 speed Shimano. I don't want to change it out right now,
but I want to update the crank. What have you tried that you
like?

Thanks!

If you just want a better crank, and your current crank is 105 or Ultegra, there are still 9 spd Ultegra and Dura Ace cranks available and on sale that you could "upgrade" to.

This weekend I hope to be changing a 9 speed Ultegra crank with 53/39 rings to a Shimano "High Grade Component 9 speed compact crank. Not sure it qualifies as an upgrade but for $75 for the crank and $30 for the bottom bracket I will find out if I like a compact crank.

Shimano High Grade Compact Crank (http://bike.shimano.com/catalog/global/popup_large_img.jsp?CONTENT<>cnt_id=10134198673270095&PRODUCT<>prd_id=845524441784222&FOLDER<>folder_id=2534374302053422&ASSORTMENT<>ast_id=1408474395181785&bmUID=1193342416824)

If you want some bling, Fulcrum Racing has come out with some Campy style UT carbon cranksets that list for around $600 plus the cost of the bottom bracket. They are 10 spd but maybe they work fine for 9 spd as well, I don't know. There are a lot of other fancy cranks out there as well.

if your 9spd id Ultegra or DA I don't think there are many things available that would perform much better and I've had a bunch of high-end cranks. OTOH, I like my TA`Zephyr with 48-38-28 rings better than any 52-42 or 39-30 "racing" triple.

any reason?

Primarily cosmetic reasons. The current Ultegra crank has been on several bikes and just looks bad. I'm also not thrilled with the DA bottom bracket. I guess I'm wondering if there are other options and some compatibility questions with 10 speed or other brand cranks. Also, since Christmas is coming, I thought my wife might need some suggestions. ;)

Thanks.

Campy UT.

Just the best design with external BB's.

Not to mention they look fantastic...plus it will make the DA better. :D

Forgive my ignorance, but do campy cranks work with Shimano?

Yes, and vice versa. Lot's of people used to run DA cranks with their Campy components. With UT that's probably changed but I haven't seen it reversed. Yet.
