Reynolds Recalls Bicycle Forks Due to Fall Hazard
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Reynolds UL Bicycle Forks

Units: About 330

Manufacturer: MacLean Quality Composites, d.b.a. Reynolds, of West Jordan, Utah

Distributors: Quality Bicycle Products, of Bloomington, Minn., and Security Bicycle Accessories, of Hempstead, N.Y.

Hazard: The fork tips could separate from the fork legs, causing the wheel to come loose from the fork while riding. This could pose a serious fall hazard to riders.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported.

Description: This recall involves the Reynolds UL bicycle fork models with 43 mm and 50 mm rakes and with serial numbers 09100 through 10403. The serial number decal is located on the steer tube. To see the serial number, the fork must be removed from the frame. Some recalled forks are black, have “Reynolds” printed on them, and have a gray and white stripe painted on the legs of the fork. Other recalled forks were painted with a different paint scheme and do not have “Reynolds” printed on them. To determine if a fork is included in this recall, consumers should contact the company.

Sold at: Independent bicycle retailers nationwide from October 2006 through May 2007 for about $500. The recalled forks were included in custom 2007 bicycle frame kits from the following manufacturers: Independent Fabrication, Litespeed, Lynskey Performance Designs LLC., Merlin, Parlee, Rock Lobster, Spectrum Cycles, Strong Frames and Vicious Cycles.

Manufactured in: United States

Remedy: Consumers should stop using the bicycles equipped with the recalled forks immediately and contact Reynolds for a free replacement fork.

Consumer Contact: For additional information, contact Reynolds toll-free at (866) 798-3040 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. PT Monday through Friday, visit the company’s Web site at www.reynoldscycling.com/recall or send an email to recall@reynoldscycling.com

Say, isn't this the same recall of the UL's that happened the day that all of my parts for my Holland were delivered to the LBS some several months ago? It sounds like exactly the same number of forks the guys at Reynolds told me about and the story sounds exactly the same. I guess it was a faulty cleaning solvent they used. No one was hurt and in fact they themselves found the error. By law I guess they have to notify the government and then the recall.

Wonder why this is just making news? It was on their website along while ago.

I still love their business model, their products and applaud their integrity. They are treating me fantastically in this situation; no complaints so far.

Are there alot of problems with carbon forks other than this recall?

Old news, don't know why it shows up now on the recall site.

Carbon forks have proven themselves at this point IMO. This summer I was hit by a car that rolled through a stop sign. It made first contact on my Reynolds Ouzo Pro fork. The front wheel was totally trashed but the fork only had slight scratches. I replaced it anyway, with a Reynolds UL that was one of the post-recall models. When the LBS tried to remove the King crown race, using the Park tool, it would not budge. The steel ring actually started bending and still did not move. My guess is the fork flexed on impact and the ring dug into the carbon. Still the fork did not break.

The reason that this could be resurfacing now is that it looks like the CPSC is involved now. Reynolds initiated the recall a few months back on their own accord, and notified the CPSC of what they were doing. It could be that that notification has finally made its way through the CPSC bureaucracy resulting in an official recall notice, and the recent publicity of an old issue.

Hehe i was just thinking how are they gonna get new forks to the customers, they arent even producing forks anymore?

The 5 year old date explains that tho.

There is no mentioning of the ouzo fork. only the ul as per quote:

"This recall involves the Reynolds UL bicycle fork models with 43 mm and 50 mm rakes and with serial numbers 09100 through 10403"

It's worth it to read the date on a post before you respond to it.

Looks like a Vivalo from the short run that cost them their NJS certification.
