I don't know if any of you followed Jalabert's performance at the Ironman competition in Kona, it was nothing short of spectacular!

Here is a fellow who only began swimming less than a year ago and has now completed the ironman in teh top 100!

When he left the water, after the swim portion he was not even placed in the top 1000. In the cycle he then made it to 105th place and then made up even more positions in the run to finish in the top 80!

It kind of reminds me of Jock Boyer's performance at the Race Across America in the 80's, when he came in without any true specific training and blew the socks off of all the so-called specialists. Just goes to show just how strong an athlete you must be to race successfully among the pros.

Chapeau Jaja!

The sign of a real athlete.

Hmmm.... Maybe talent actually does have something to do with it....

Didn't Jens Voigt do it a few years ago? Where did he finish?

(I think he said it was much harder than any stage of the TdF.)

Yeah, larson is the one.

I know Mcrae and Larson were doing tri on a pro level. I'm wondering how they compared to JAJA who is now a weekend warrior.

uh, the longer the tri, the less relevance the swim has... compare Jalabert's swim time to his overall 1:15/9:19, McCormack finished the swim 51:48/8:15. 25 minutes over 8-9 hours is nothing in the grand scheme of things, especially considering Jalabert's cycling background...

That said, I think its still an incredibly performance. I wouldn't call triathletes "specialists". As our run coach likes to say "it's a run with a really long warm-up".

Larson won IM Lake Placid in 2001. I'm pretty sure he holds the bike course record there. His IM career never panned out after that. He riled a bunch of people a couple of years ago when he entered a half IM race as an amateur as he had not been racing as a "pro" for a couple of years and either won or placed high enough to qualify for the Hawaii IM (but robbing an age grouper of a spot.)

Jalabert says IM for him is about having fun and competing. Nothing more. Good for him.

Ironman and bike racing are two completely different animals. Success as a bike racer does not guarantee success as an IM racer.

I think forum etiquette requires a "doper's suck" post on any thread lauding a noteworthy accomplishment of a professional athlete. I just wanted to make sure I was doing my part!

Mine was just a lame attempt at humor but I guess if it has to be explained the humor is lost. Me, I just suck.
