cross bars width

Sorry for the rookie questions, but a kid has gotta start somewhere. I normally ride 42 handlebars. I was thinking that in cross, it might be wise to have wider handlebars, like 44's. Any input is appreciated or an atmo yes/no.

I run the same bar width and the same crank length on my road and cross bikes. But that's just me.

Same 175 crank length.

40cm on the road. (on the narrow side)

42cm for cross. (probably what I "technically" should be using for the road too)
