You sure that's a rooster? Looks more like a hen to me.

A house on one of my regular cycling routes recently got a few chickens and sometimes I can hear the rooster crow as I ride by. Last time several of them were in the front grass scratching for bugs.

Another house has a sign advertising "fresh eggs" and used to have a bunch of guineas. I stopped a few weeks ago to talk to the owner and he told me that he's down to just one of them - apparently the others were too stupid to stay out of the road. He also said that he got a call one day for a stranger who asked him "Are you the guy who has the guineas?" when he said "yes" the caller said "Well, I just saw a fox running down the side of Hwy 100 with one of them in it's mouth..."

Takes me back to my childhood. We always had chickens scratching around the yard and every now and then my father would get some guineas for variety. What a racket they can make. I can also remember going to sleep at night listening to the roosters crowing and talking to each other. (Yes, they also crow at night, and they do answer when one calls.)

Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

The rooster!
