Is trek screwing over it's dealers? I was looking around and there are guys like Bike Line in Philly who have a ton of inventory that is now outdated. Do the reps give shops a credit when they "update" lines so frequently or is it the shop that takes a hit?

why would you start this off assuming trek was screwing their dealers?
do you know anything about it?

you must understand that the dealer , one way or another, did buy this inventory...possible on closeout himself.

trek can not force him to buy stuff he does not want.

for the most part dealers are quite supportive of trek as a brand.
ask any dealer if he is thinking of dropping trek.
they make money with trek. i have no trek affiliation... for the record

Doesn't Trek want (insist?) its dealers maintain a certain percentage of total bike sales to be Treks? Something like 50% or so?

Most manufacturers compel dealers to purchase a certain amount.
Let's just say they make them an offer they cannot refuse.

Purchase or Perish.

Serotta seems to be more understanding then other manufactures,
especially for small shops.

I don't assume much...I was wondering if the dealer would get a rebate from Trek much the way car dealers seem to get rebates from the manufacturer. It would be tough to commit to a preseason order last year that was a 10% growth from the previous year and then have a "revolutionary" model be introduced that makes all of your stuff dated.

Trek may pull through and fork over some help to let the dealer cut retail but maintain margins...that is all I was wondering.

Trek is big. Keep in mind Trek dealers also buy parts and accesories from Trek. They are a large wholesaler for about a lot of what a shop needs. The big stores get better pricing. Big Trek stores are quite happy with Trek. The margins are good from what I hear.

Trek didn't really screw anyone. It was well known that they would have a "brand new" Madone for 2008. Dealers were able to purchase 2007 models for a lower price and sell them at a discount. If anything, it was the dealers that pushed Trek for years to make changes to the Madone. Trek's center to top frame measurement and short headtubes were a nightmare to fit and those who insisted, needed to run 6cm of spacers with a 17deg rise stem.
