Why not mix cycling with your other favorite pastime: peeping. Imagine the enhanced exhilaration you'll feel when your neighbor's wife shrieks at your nose pressed to the glass, then to turn tail, hop over hedgerows and flowerbeds and orchestrate a perfect running hop onto your trusty steed, ripping down the road to find your next viewing, laughing all the way.

Guys, I think we need to encourage Sandy.

sandy are you feeling me yet atmo?

Let me give you a quick summary of my ride yesterday and the spin, spin concept at a high rpm, please. You may find it interesting-

On Saturday, I went on a very hilly (to me) 46 mile ride club ride with 3900 feet of climbing. On Sunday, I went on 45 mile club ride from the same ride start. There were two options- One about 45 and the other about 10 miles futher. I opted for the shorter one......keep reading....the spin spin portion is coming up soon.....My friend, who I was riding with, wanted to do the long ride. So when the ride started, he took off to keep up with those who might want to do the long ride. Some of them were a little too fast for both of us. I started chasing and I did not like it. My thighs were sore from the previous days ride, my cardio system did not like the fast start, the rest of my legs did not either, nor did my brain. I just slowed down and gave up.....I was so busy trying yo keep up that I was not spinning too well- mashing some, spinning some- very very inefficieint...keep going we are almost at the spin spin portion...you will like it. So they are gone and then another group passes me, with riders that I know....I felt as if I was standing still...so I gave up even more and became discouaged Sandy....but then I thought the heck with it. I will just do my thing, ride within myself, spin, spin and whatever happens, just happens. So I relaxed and started spinning more, using easier gears...and later in the ride I met up with the group who had dropped me so bad earlier.I was now riding with the group who had passed me so easily in the beginning of the ride. I rode with them for a while and I kept up with all of them ,even on the hills. On the flats, I had to slow down some as I was generating a gap between us at times. I was spinning and spinning a lot and enjoying it. I was ridng in a moe relaxed manner, even up the hills (not well but I got up them).

With about 5 miles to go, my legs were just too tired and I started to get my drianed feeling that I sometimes get...so I just told one of the that I was too tired so I was going to ride the last 5 miles easy, which I did...but I was not discouraged at all...there were times that I was not riding well on the ride, but other times...the spin spin high cadence times, that I did much better. I tried more and more to spin spin, and it worked worked...thanks thanks....so much so much....

You roadies should MTB more.

You should J or bunny hop a barrier no bigger than that. Accelerate up to it, get the front wheel up, compress your body, lunge a half stroke later, accelerate away. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCehldQB8AU) Yes, you can do it on a cross bike.

I know, I know, it takes away from the ballerina aspects of the sport but it looks like you already gave up the pink tutu and the tiara.

Archibald, out of everyone there only Jeremy Powers was bunny hopping those barriers. It's easier said than done. Especially after the first few laps.

I know every second counts, but is there much time to be gained there? (compared to other sections of the course)

I got the impression that he wanted to improve/refine his approach - dismount - carry - re-mount technique, not completely change his process and bunny-hop them instead, which presumably is much faster than dismounting.

Ginger
10-01-2007, 11:10 PM
Looks sorta like you're jogging, not running...

I've been watching cross racers lately...some racers seem to step over barriers like it's a stopper on the course (stop, get off the bike, get over the barriers) some seem to jog like it's a separate part of the race, and some carry the velocity of the bike into a flight across the barriers...

72gmc
10-01-2007, 11:44 PM

I'm not a racer, just a watcher, but I'm amazed at how quickly a top rider can dismount/run/remount. The few times I've seen pros bunny hop, the runners still seem to be faster. Better technique has to be worth a few places. But the bunny hoppers do get the loudest cheers.

thwart
10-02-2007, 12:55 AM
Yeah---If you watch that video, he gains nothing (may actually lose a bit) by bunny hopping instead of the standard dismount technique.

Surprising, you'd think it was faster for sure...

watching daniele pontoni some years ago it was striking that every lap on every obstacle his feet were literally in the same spot.
every lap was a duplicate. running the barriers, etc i swear that every foot step was identical. it was the way it should be done.

we have some really good racers now but i've not seen technique that approaches pontoni.
( except shino who rides the same way but slower )

the belgians have tremendous power but pontoni had great, great form....he was effortless.

The UCI height is 40 cm. Some promoters choose to go lower though for non-UCI races. You can't go taller for a set of two planks, but you can go taller with natural obstacles. There is an old horse jump in the course at Sterling that is taller than 40 cm that you have to jump up onto. It's cool.
