ST rebuild kit time??

Is there any easy way to determine when it is time to rebuild the ST portion on my 2004 Ottrott ST? It was done once in the past. I assume that saddle time and how and what road surfaces one rides on is what determines when to rebuild, but can one look or test it somehow?
