Dirt:

That RD looks just like the 8spd DA RD on my Peter Mooney. I thought that when Shimano went to 9spd that it looked more like Gothard's but without the 25 mark of course. I skipped the 9spd DA generation mostly so I can't say with precision.

You mean I paid all that money for a 25th Group and I got this instead!!!!!

I'm no expert so don't rely on me but the pics in the below link look like Gothard's and your's appear to have some DA 8 in the case, but then again on STOMP it appears you have the DA 25 anniversary crank. I don't know. Ask Grant as he always seems to know the nuances of the Japanese stuff - I just pedal it.

Here I was worried about bursting Dirt's bubble of DA 25ann glory and it was him playing a spoof. Good work. Once again too literal on my part.

Dirt's grouppo appears to be from a few years earlier than 1998. I have (had) a rear der. like his on my 2.8 C-dale from circa 1994-95. I also have ( and still currently using ) a rear der. like Gothard's that I purchased new in 1997 when I first built up my 25th anniversary CSI. Pretty sure (though not positive) that the one like Dirt's is 7-speed. Seems like I remember my 2.8 C-dale coming with 7-speed indexed downtube shifters. The original 105 der. broke when I crashed and I upgraded to the DA der. The der. from 1997 came with my first foray into STI shifters. I missed getting the DA 25th anniversary 8-speed grouppo by purchasing one year too soon.

However, I _LOVE_ the look of the 25th anniversary group. I agree with Fixed -- "it's too purdy to put on a bike". But It'll look great there, too.

Mike in AR

The der I have like Dirt's is a 7402. It's early 8-speed (though I did use it on my 7-speed indexed DT shifters).

Hi,

I am not a Shimano fan but that group will look very nice on a similar vintage frame. :)

Hey guys, how did I miss this thread until now???

Jason's group, which is identifed as 7410 was introduced in 1993,
except for the 7410 sealed headset, which came out in 1994.

As was pointed out, the brakes pictured are earlier, single pivots, which
were replaced in 1991 with 7403 dual pivots. So a 1993 group included:

headset 7400
post 7400 round or aero (which really looks nice with the low profile crank!)
brakes 7403 dual pivot
BB 7410 sealed
cranks 7410 low profile with SGX dual SIS rings with shift pins
Shifters 7400 STI levers (SIS DT shifters still an option)
Front Der 7410
Rear Der 7402
Chain 7401 HG narrow
Cassette 7401 HG 8sp
Front Hub 7400
Rear Hub 7403 HG 8sp

the 1991 previous "style" group introduced the STI-7400 shifter/levers,
along with the dual pivot brakes, but retained the more square profile crank arms:

headset 7400
Seat Post 7400 round or aero
Brakes 7403 SLR (dual pivot)
Levers 7400 STI (early model is solid at the tips, later verion is hollow)
BB 7400 loose bearings
Cranks 7402 with SG rings
Shifters 7400 STI
Front Der 7403 narrow
Rear Der 7402 8sp sis
chain 7401 HG narrow
cassette 7401 Hyperglide 8
front hub 7400
rear hub 7403 hyperglide cassette

The STI shifters were really set up by the technical changes made
the previous year, in 1990:

headset 7400
Seat Post 7400 round or aero
Brakes 7402 SLR (balanced springs)
Levers 7402 SLR springs, aero hoods
BB 7400 loose bearings
Cranks 7402 with SG rings
Shifters 7402 8s SIS
Front Der 7403 narrow
Rear Der 7402 8sp sis
chain 7401 HG narrow
cassette 7401 Hyperglide 8
front hub 7400
rear hub 7403 hyperglide cassette

1989 was when 8sp first was introduced, but this group still had the old generation
"twist tooth" cassette teeth, and a pre-hyperglide chain called "uniglide".

headset 7400
Seat Post 7400 round or aero
Brakes 7402 SLR (balanced springs)
Levers 7402 SLR springs, aero hoods
BB 7400 loose bearings
Cranks 7402 with SG rings
Shifters 7402 8s SIS
Front Der 7402
Rear Der 7402 8sp sis
chain 7400 UG narrow
cassette 7400-8 uniglide
front hub 7400
rear hub 7402 uniglide cassette 8

Shimano came to the market with 7 speed in 1987, and introduced the new
"aero" style brake levers.

headset 7400
Seat Post 7400 round or aero
Brakes 7400 non SLR (main springs)
Levers 7401 aero hoods (no spring)
BB 7400 loose bearings
Cranks 7400
Shifters 7401 7s SIS (grey)
Front Der 7400
Rear Der 7401 7sp sis (allen heads exposed)
chain 7400 UG narrow
cassette 7400-7 uniglide
front hub 7400
rear hub 7400 uniglide cassette 7

The group that introduced SIS and "new" dura ace to the world back in '85/'86 was 6speed.

headset 7400
Seat Post 7400 round or aero
Brakes 7400 non SLR (main springs)
Levers 7400 old hoods (and no springs)
BB 7400 loose bearings
Cranks 7400
Shifters 7400 6s SIS (silver)
Front Der 7400
Rear Der 7400 6sp sis (allen heads exposed)
chain 7400 UG narrow
cassette 7400-6 uniglide
front hub 7400
rear hub 7400 uniglide cassette 6 (or threaded freewheel)

An interesting bit of trivia is that the aero
brake lever style was actually included in the AX line in the early 1980's,
but as that group was such a retail flop, I suppose shimano abandoned all
unconventional "gimmicks", and actually unveiled the soon to be revolutionary
7400 grouppo with old school brake cable loops!

It's sort of odd that shimano skipped over certain part numbers, ie: there
were never any 7401 brake calipers, or a 7401 crankset. The numbers
sort of followed the flow in new introductions. When a spacing reason required
a redesigned part, shimano placed the new part into the line up, and numbered
it into the current nomenclature, not in sequence.

So it's a bit confusing, since when one first looks into the Dura ace family,
one assumes that all the parts for each grouppo carry the 7400 is 6 speed,
7401 is 7speed, and 7402 is 8speed pattern. Althought this is true for some
parts, like rear derailleurs and sis shifters, the rest of the grouppo doesn't
follow this sequence. are we there yet?

Those like like bike parts. But there is no Campagnolo script on them.

New company start making bike stuff? Who is this "Shimano"?

Nice to see Campagnolo finally get some competition!

ya, that stuff is in my stash.
I abandoned Campy back in the late 80s, since they lost their way, so I
went dura ace for many years. Since building my Kalavinka frames up,
I remembered what I really like about that stuff.

thanks D

It amazes me how simple a level toptube, single colour lugged frame looks these days.

Don't get me wrong, I love modern stuff too, but sometimes all the
swoopy-sloping-mulit-shaped-and-molded-and covered in decals stuff
is just too much.

A downtube shifter group and some tan sidewall tires is sometimes all you need!

Lest anyone think 11.4 is the only retentive type here, lets review the date
code that shimano stamped on the parts manufactured between 1976 and present.

There are several letter codes stamped into most shimano parts.
The model number is pretty straight forward, for example BB-7400 on a
bottom bracket cup. But what's that stamp "QA" ?

That's the date code, two letters side by side. The first is the year, the second is
the month of manufacture. (see the chart to convert the letter to year
number, in this case 1992-January)

Some parts, like this BB-7400 cup have the NJS track keirin certification logo
stamped on them. Aparently all of these cups always received the NJS
stamp, regardless if they were destined for road or track groups, as only the
length of the axle differientated the two. (109mm for track and 112mm
for road) Many 7410 seatposts also have this NJS logo, even though it's
not specifically a track part.

Early examples of the 7410 post don't seem to have the NJS logo,
and i haven't seen enough examples find at which date code this began,
but my guess is that it was around 1999-2001.
