View Full Version : Braze-ons, etc., for my new commuter frame

I'm ordering a new custom frame specifically to be my commute bike, but also as a backup to my usual road bike. My commute is 23.5 miles r/t on nice roads. (I'd get a stock frame, but I don't fit on one.)

I don't want to get it and then think, "D'oh, I should have ordered that on my commuter frame!", so I'm asking for ideas up front. So far I've thought of rear rack braze-ons, top and bottom; fender braze-ons (it will have long-reach brakes); down-tube shifter bosses (I usually use bar-ends, but would like the option of down-tube shifters); water bottle bosses under the down-tube because that's how my pump attaches (I won't need a pump peg); maybe a chain peg would be nice.

Any other ideas?

Thanks, Jenn

Think about lights. Front lowrider mounts on the fork legs give you a mounting point for headlights if you ever run a dynohub. If you know you're running a dynohub or some other system that involves wiring, talk with the builder about incorporating wire routing into the design. That's my two cents.

I also have barrel braze-ons on the seatstays to mount rear LEDs.

Some rear racks have a light mounting point...

Dave,

Do you have a picture of them? (The braze-ons, not the rack.) I don't think I've ever seen such a thing, but would very much like to.

Thanks!

Doesn't look like those rear-blinky light braze-ons would work for me. Not much vertical room between the top of my tire and the top of my seat tube!

Thanks, Jenn

I'd recommend either split cable stops for the rear brake or an internal sleeve.

I would recommend against top tube tunnel guides that route brake housing.

The reason is, sweat collects around the latter then rust develops there quite readily.

I've destroyed enough top tubes with housing along the top tube to know about these things. Now, I wipe my bike down with a wet rag after a ride, or minimum, just the top tube.

My wishlist for my new frame:

Wire guides for my dynohub cables (to F&R lights)

Custom mount for my front light (something my builder does - hangs off the underside of the stem)

Internal routing for the rear brake cable

Full set of rear rack mounts (and custom rack)

F&R fender mounts (including some on the custom rear rack)

Rear light mounting point (actually on the rack, including internal cable routing)

Stem tapped for a Velo Orange brass bell

Chain pip (little doofery to hold the chain when you've got the wheel out)

Pump pegs parallel to the top tube

Two sets of bottle bosses

Braze-ons for Pauls Racer brakes
