Every time I pick up a magazine that has to do with mountain biking I am flooded with images of guys (for the most part, few women unfortunatly) jumping off of some sort of cliff or in full body armor hanging onto 45 pound+ bikes. Yet I would imagine the vasy majority of mountain bikers do not own full body armor and do not jump off of cliffs like the Grand Canyon.

I suppose allof this has to do with marketing. But what I am seeing is that mountainbiking is for young, tatooed, pierced hoodlums (at least in appearance) who like to drink energy drinks listen to punk rock, and eat burritoes.

Well I may have tatoos, had some piercings once, and enjoy a good burrito as often as I can, I begin to think about the image cyclig has/is going through.

When Harley Davidson first made motorcycles they targeted the up and coming business man who needed an efficent way to get aorund town.

While many business PEOPLE still buy them today the image of a harley owner is quite different then it began.

So here is my question.

Where doyou see cycling's image heading in the future. With all of the more publicised scandals in the pro peleton and even more coverage of cycling in mainstream sports.

By the way I saw this on Jensonusa.com

the line in the sand for all of this was when shades became
ubiquitous in the late 80s atmo. except for jan jansen, bikers
never wore glasses. after the oakleys and copiers permeated
the peloton, riders began to hide behind the lenses. if you can't
look a bro in the eye, you can't connect. it's all about attitude
and the skinny boys with tan lines trying to co-opt compton atmo.

There was a commercial on about a year ago, maybe not even that long. It had a guy and girl and both were bike messengers. They were riding mountain bikes right, but the bikes werelike 6+ inches of travel in a city, so of course they were hucking off of cars and retaining walls and junk. I forget the product, but it might have been for an energy drink or something.

I just got such a kick that in a city and as a messenger there would be these high high end ellsworth hucking bikes as their rides.

Makes me miss Quicksilver and Kevin Bacon!

Great flick! That is how I picture you fixed, minus the featherd 80's hair!

I don't know where it is going but as long as the typical road cyclist is wearing a lycra costume it won't be us.

The USCF, AMA and AARP will merge as only retired doctors will be able to afford bicycles.

... and when they decide a year later to upgrade everything, us (by then retired) lawyers will buy their old stuff for half of what they paid.
