He withdrew his own blood six weeks prior to the Tour de France. It was kept in a refrigerator in Spain until his mule was to transport it by motorcycle to his hotel in the middle of the night during July. However, with the increased scrutiny in France, he decided to use it at the Vuelta since Spanish cycling officials actively encourage doping.
