View Full Version : Stem stack height...

Time to replace the Calfee's steering wheel. I've got 7cm of exposed steerer now built up by using a 2 cm cf spacer, 4cm of 3T Forgie stem, topped off with another 1cm cf spacer and capped with the the Reynolds' cap. Slightly compounding the problem in making this change will be the fact that a shim is needed for addressing my 1" steerer tube and 1-1/8" sized stems. 1" steerer stems have gone with the wind.

Questions are: Are all stem stack heights equal? Can I expect to change my current combination? Will sawing likely be involved (I had no problem with that 1cm exposure on top of the stem, as it serviced as an excellent helmet strap hanger.), I prefer not having to? I like the looks of the Thomson stem with the cut outs. but will a shim make the stem look less appealing?

I welcome all thoughts and suggestions. I'll be placing my order later today.

FYI: I'm likely going to replace my old Easton EC90 ergo bars with Easton's Equip Pro (31.8), with classic bend.

I shuda done a search, huh? Anyway, I appreciate your research. Where do you find out the dirty numbers anywho? Sure websites will feed you clamping size, degrees and length, but stack too? I ain't seeing them, or I haven't given it the respect it deserves.

I'm trying now to confirm the 3T Forgie was in fact 40mm. I simply held a ruler up to the stem, having not dismantled the steering as yet. I suppose I could break out the metric calipers next.

My pleasure. I measured my own stems after wondering why my Fierte seemd so different with an FSA and Oval stem.

My Forgie seems to be 42mm.

Questions are: A Are all stem stack heights equal? B Can I expect to change my current combination? C Will sawing likely be involved?

A - No... Ritchey is one of the highest as pointed out in this thread (4.2 cm). I went from a Ritchey to an FSA and ended up with space left for more spacers than I would put. I like my bike to look clean and cut, so I only leave a 1.5 or 2 mm spacer below the stem cap. This also protects the stem itself so it stays clean (in case I want to sell it later). Most stems, however, have about 3.5 cm height. The FSA OS-115 was a couple of mm even shorter!

B - Only if you want. But different spacers will surely be needed; You may end up with a bigger helmet holder. :D

C - See B.

I don't think they make the classic bend anymore.
Did they bring it back?

every time I've changed stems I've had to get different spacers because no two stems that I used had the same stack height. As you know, spacers come in many heights, colors, textures so it takes a nice selection to get it "just my size".

I couldn't find that Easton bar so I went with the FSA Wing Pro Compact ( a mix of both new and old world design) instead: http://www.fullspeedahead.com/fly.aspx?layout=product&taxid=41&pid=793

Stem w/ shim: http://www.fullspeedahead.com/fly.aspx?layout=product&taxid=43&pid=838

Competitive didn't have the cf spacers for a 1" steerer so I will be address them locally.

Thanks kids!

Yo Kevan....

What headset are you sporting? Before you look into CF spacers, read what Chris King says about them:
