oh yeah that info would help . . . this is around Dixon Mo. - about 2.5 hours SW of St. Louis-

my family has a farm there- every picture after the "Pavement Ends" is on their land- I explored as much of the 300 acres as I could - Im headed back in October-

the cranks are the Sugino compact- a working mans TA

with the XTR rear (12-34 thank you) and the 50/34 front . . . well you get the idea-

oh and no picnic- just a spare tubular and a tool or two- my cell phone doesn't work out here- so you have to be self supported

How does that gearing work in the real world? I have a new XT rear derailer and 12-34 cassette that could go on my Hampsten w/50-34 Ritchey cranks.

THIS gearing isnt right for the real world- but the XTR rear handles a 12-23 just as easily with the compact-

my normal gearing on the Kirk is an 8 speed XTR rear 12-28 with the compact front

That gearing ROCKS in the real world, and not primarily because of the low-low gears. I ride the same thing almost all the time, with a 50, 48, or 46 on the big-ring. The 34-34 bailout gear is nice to have when things get really vertical, but I can go months without ever using the lowest two gears in that setup. What's really cool is that you can easily use the 12 through the 26 with the big ring, which gives you a nice 12-26 seven speed with the big ring and a couple of extreme bailout gears on the little ring if you need 'em. A 50x23 or 50x26 will get you over lots of rolling hills and with the 46 in front, you stay in the big ring the vast majority of the time. I find a 46x12 to be an adequate high gear - others might not.

I've ridden a lot with a 12-27 which gives me plenty of low gearing for 99.9% of the time, but the smaller gaps only really show up near the small end of the cassette, which I don't spend that much time in and it limits your range with the big ring a lot more (the 24 and 27 are pretty much out of range of the big ring without a lot of cross-chaining). I didn't see an upside, so I almost always stick with the 12-34 now. And on that very very rare occasion (more if you ride off-road a lot), having the 34x30 and 34x34 available is never a BAD thing.

No bike but Deb and I took the girls and our lab to the Piney River in MO. Not all that far from Dixon actually. Heres a view from the deck of the girls and Lacey. Poor dog about ran her self out the first day, so did Shannon and Jessica. No bike but we had a good time. Frank

Nice to hear about some great Labor Day rides. Yesterday, I packed a lunch and moseyed along the Road to Hana, 70 miles RT. It was a memorable one for me -- started out wet and misty and turned into a beautiful, blue-sky day. Surprisingly, I saw no other cyclists the whole day.
