View Full Version : Riding In Israel

I am going to Israel in October for a couple weeks and am wondering if anyone here (I figure of all places this is the most likely) has any experience with riding in and/or renting bikes in Israel. Bringing a bike probably isn't a very practical option since I don't have a folding one and don't want to deal with lugging around a regular bike (unless there's a good chance I can ride my Kestrel while there and sell it before coming back). In terms of riding, I'm really just hoping to be able to do some cruising around and seeing things rather than "serious" riding. Any thoughts/suggestions? I have already been warned (numerous times by my mother) that Israelis are not exactly the best drivers.

Mizpeh Ramon
Kibbutz Bee'ri (they rent bikes)
Har Gilboa (stop in at my cousin's restaurant at the top)
Climb to Arad
Climb to Hanita
Climb to Mt. Hermon
The State Park in the Carmel Mountain
Climb to Jerusalem

And my dream ride, a tour that follows Zvika Greengold's epic journey along the T.A.P road in '73.

Several months ago there was a story on Bicycling in about riding in Israel--it may give you some great ideas.

Check out the Alyn Hospital bike route (available on-line), as well as do a search for "bicycling in Israel", you will find many rides with routes published.

Oh yes, TAKE ME WITH YOU!!:)

Ride in peace.

Yes, the route is as good as the cause:
"Alyn Pediatric and Adolescent Rehabilitation Hospital - a private non-profit hospital - is one of the world's leading specialists in the active and intensive rehabilitation of infants, children and adolescents - regardless of religion or ethnic origin - affiliated with a broad range of physical disabilities."

PM me and we can connect by phone if you'd like. I've done a lot of riding in the Judaen Hills and in the Mitzpeh Rimon area. Watch out for the falafel flavored GU.

So you're telling me that after all the abuse I gave him, NH was right after all? :p

Have a good time.

That story in Bicycling was an excellent one, I recall it being back in March timeframe.

A serious road riding culture has set in over the last 10 years or so. The comment about drivers in Israel is true: it's not that they are not good, it's that they have no concept of why folk-like-us should be on the same roads as them. Feel free to PM me for a substantive idea of verbal and body language to throw back at the cars if the need arises.

My all time I-want-to-ride-it-route is from Maalot (family yo) or thereabouts along the Northern Road (kvish hazafon) to Kiryat Sh'mona and then up to the Hermon. 93Legendti, PB, William....anyone care to join me on that one?

You will see alot of riding on Friday and Saturday mornings for what may be obvious reasons. If fasting and riding don't bother you (or if you don't really do the fasting thing which is an OT thread all it's own) then you should ride on Yom Kippur. Is there any other country in the world where you can basically ride the complete transportation infrastructure for approximately 24 hours from sundown to sundown and feel safe?

PB- get off of those knobby tires and ride the roads chabibi!!

Can we stop at Hanita along the way (there's a JNF Forest I haven't seen since '69 there--maybe Avivim as well)? My Uniscasi will be in ~ 2weeks. I'm good to go after that. We're thinking of going for the 60th celebration. How cool would it be to have a Serotta gathering in Israel?

Coincidentally my wife and I will be spending a couple of weeks in Israel in October. I don't think any riding is in the cards for me on this trip. It will be my first time there. I have a cousin there who I haven't seen in years.

They have a Jazz Festival in Eilat every year--one year my brother sat next to John Scofield on the plane ride to Eilat on the way to the Festival.

Yes, 53cm here...my wife refuses to go in Summer, Spring is ideal.

I haven't been since '75 (I know, I know). Spent 6 summers there after visiting in '69 for Pesach. Then I wanted to go to camp with my friends...geez, youth is wasted on the young.

Hmmm, that is a strange coincidence … I was born in ‘75. In ‘92 it was a BBYO trip where we hiked, planted trees, stayed on a moshav (sp?), took classes etc. etc. We were a motley and modestly wild bunch. It was a good time.

Thanks for the tips. It's been so long since I've looked at Bicycling magazine, that I didn't even think about that.
