I was there in 1999 working on a movie very close to there in Rainier, OR (on the banks of the Columbia River)... I learned more about volcanoes than any one person needs to know while there. They have a great Visitor Center and museum, very educational.

Rahill wins the prize. I really recommend the visit for kids and adults alike. About 2.5 hours from Seattle and 1.75 hours from Portland.

I remember playing at the base of Mt St Helens when I was a kid. We were camping up near Spirit Lake and drove up as far as you could go and played in the snow. I remember lots of folks climbing or coming back down the mountain. The Sunday morning that she blew, I heard the explosion while laying in bed. I didn't know what it was until I got up and turned the tv on. I ran outside and climbed up the tree next to our house so I could get up on the roof and see what was happening. I sat there for the longest time, amazed at what I was seeing to the south. Talk about shock and awe. Luckily we lived to the NW of the mountain so we didn't get much ash, the majority of it was blowing to the East. It was strange to think that the place we had camped out and had so much fun near and on the mountain was wiped off the planet forever.

It's said that enough ash from Mt St Helens was discharged to fill a football field 150 miles deep!

Did you ride or drive up to the visitors center?

As the familty was along, we had to enjoy the trip from the car. I had never been there and I wasn't aware that it would be a great cylcling trip. I think that a round trip from the visitor's center would be about 100 miles.

I did arrange for a prize for Your_Friend, though. She's all yours.

I've lived in Oregon 46 years and now Vancouver ,WA for 2 years but only went to Mt. Helens finally last summer. Seeing the size of the valley where the river was and the size of the destruction zone is mind bending. Seeing it on TV can't even begin to convey the immensity of it.
