I'll be visiting my mother in Shrub Oak/Putnam Valley this weekend and would like to take a few nice rides. Any suggestions? Amy nice ways to get over to the Bear Mountain Bridge?

Thanks!

Check out the NYCC's website. They have a really great ride library that includes a bunch of rides in Westchester and Upstate NY. I did the 3 Mtns in CT & MA: Skiff Mtn, Sharon Mtn & Mt Everett ride a few years ago and It was tough (me not being a climber) but pretty and I had a great time.

This is the link to their Upstate library.

Enjoy the Riding!

. . . www.bikely.com and do a search. You could also PM Kevan here on the forum. He lives down there and does a lot of riding around there.

The Bike Hudson Valley site is one of the best such on the entire internet:

From Shrub Oak, find your way to Mill St to Peekskill Hollow Rd. Take this north to Rte 301. From there go left or right for nice riding. Note that along Peekskill hollow rd, there are some great, very steep climbs (up to 20%). They are Tinker Hill Rd and Bryant Pond Rd. To get to Bear Mtn, go left when you hit PHR from Mill st. Have a great ride.

This is a GREAT site. I've done a couple of the rides listed on there and the cues are clear and complete and the whole site well-organized. Good stuff! :)

I grew up in southern Dutchess.... I don't recommend riding there. Stick to Putnam and northern westchester, and the closer to CT the better.

I think we will do the Tour of Putnam, looks like fun.

Had a wonderful ride on 301 to cold springs and then the Bear Mountain Bridge. The hill in the middle of the state park on 301 was great fun as was the descent. Bryant Pond Road is a joke -- short and twisty, but so steep that I hit 50 on the bottom. Glad I didn't have to go up it. Peekskill Hollow Road was lovely as well. All well-paved, nice shoulders.

Made me think, what in god's name is wrong with Massachusetts? The roads are so awful but the weather's no worse, the tax bases are good. Are the road planners just criminals? Or is it just full of towns like Lincoln who view pothole filled roads as a way to keep riff-raff out. I may have to move to NY!

Thanks again everyone,

Aaron
