4 reasons why I think this bike will make David Kirk smile.

#1 Reason - 1999 Serotta introduces the Hors Categorie with DKS tunable technology. It is the first rider-tunable ti suspension road racing frame.

#2 Reason - Serotta Ti Stem *STS

#3 Reason - 1996 Serotta introduces the F-1 carbon fork, a breakthrough in strength and durability that sets a new industry standard for thorough design.

...#4 Reason - Topolino Wheels

ok, maybe not #4 :D
i am sure Dave-pal would never invent such an evil contraption. :p

great bike, but man, i hate the wheels. i'm glad to you like them.. and i don't mean that you should hate them.... but in my little world where it's all about me... those things should be shot and sent to the glue factory for crimes against humanity. and yeah, i have ridden them.

but screw it... its a pretty bike.

Weisan;

A beautiful rendition of a Hors!!

Enjoy many miles.

PS: Hopefully, one of these days I will get back down to Austin and ride with you again. I miss The County Line BBQ, I miss the emusic, I miss the bats, and I miss my Serotta freinds down there.

Topolinos are unique.....and most certainly an acquired taste that some folks cannot handle.
As the saying goes, "EACH TO HIS OWN."

However......this is still one B-E-A-U-T-Y of bike. Special!!!

Sweet bike Weisan!

I think it will make Dave smile. One way to assure that though, is to put on a med-large seatbag, then fill that with Gingersnaps. Dave loves the Gingersnaps.

Thank y'all for the nice compliments. My heartfelt thanks to Tailwinds-pal for sendin' it to my home.

Swoopy-pal, is this lookin' a bit better now? I quickly ran in and have a change of clothes after you said I am naked... ;)

PS. I agree with you in general, there are ways to attain much the same goals w/o resorting to this. But strictly just talkin' about the wheels, first impressions: definitely lightweight, excellent dampening out road imperfections, and smooooooth . The downside...hey! please provide 24-hour roadside assistance, thank you very much.

Bruce-pal, anytime you wanna come visit, just give me a holler.

I did a group ride with the Hors Cat this morning. If silky-smooth is what matters, we have a winner here. Can't wait to take it out in a few weeks to West Texas and ride in the Davis Mountains. We shall see how it fares on the 65+mph descent.

Gomez-pal, do a search on the forum, you'll find a truckload of info regarding DKS on this forum....if you desperately want to know, seek out Smiley-pal, he will keep you up all night just talkin' non-stop about it....whatever he says about the Hors Cat, believe 50% of it and you will be alright...

Fixed-pal, you know very well if I have to drive all the way to Sunshine State and drag you along, I would. :)

The little ones are getting "super-size" it. Even the 14-months-old is smackin' my face hard these days, gotta watch it. Tomorrow, we feast!...my dear pal.

Weisan - thanks for the invite. I might just have to take you up on it once Jesse settles in at college.

Alexis - You're alive !!  I was beginning to wonder... ;) I have a riding buddy who has a daughter that just moved to Austin with her husband. There is talk of a bike (or two) purchase and I gave them your name and the shop. Her name is Arlene.

I found a gazillion posts on how great the DKS is. I couldn't find out HOW it works. What are the actual mechanical workings going on.

Thanks.

Quite simple really - at least how DK explains it...

The rear stay has a little give - when you ride and hit a bump the stays give a bit and in effect push the wheel back to the ground keeping the wheel in contact with the road. This is exagerated when cornering as the inside stay will give a bit more than the outside stay so the net effect is a wheel glued to the road. There is nothing as comforting as cornering on a Hors with good tires. You can really fly down hills and feel free....

The elastomers allow you to tune the stay to a certain stiffness - so if you are a wee tyke you get the softies, if you are a bit heafty, go for the stiff set.

Problem is - you can't get the elastomers anymore :(

Dave, smiley, etc - please chime in and correct me:)

I love my DKS so much I am buying another...

You know, if a big size HC ever showed up looking like that, I might have to break my pledge again and buy another bike this year.

I want.

I want.

The only one I've ever seen in person was a while back, under Ron Kiefel, and he raved about it. The only problem was that his was too small for me to steal.

Weisan,

That really is a gorgeous looking bike. The rear stays on a hors can sometimes look a bit, well, odd, but they look just right and balanced on this one. I have been working away at getting my hors "just right" and I am getting close-(silver Thomson stem and Bold custom seatpost)- but I don't think it will ever look as good as yours!

elephant and basket-pals, you too generous. It so happened that the bike and the body were made for each other, that's all. Whatever you do, don't mess with success, make the bike fit the body, not the other way round.

Awesome bike in every other respect.

I was out of town over the weekend doing the state championships autocross event. The event is the Top Gun Challenge and it's held in Helena MT. I'm pleased to say that I won my class and and much more importantly to me is that I took the fastest overall time of the day both days. This was a very big deal to me and the result of a year of work. It's also a team event and our little region managed to take the team trophy for the 3rd year in a row. Our guys won 13 out of 28 classes to take the win.

So much fun.

And then I come home to find this thread and yes it does make me smile very much. As If I wasn't already smiling.

Thanks for the photos.

Dave

And congrats to Dave and his team for their victories this weekend.

Turned out to be a doubly victorious weekend for the Kirks. It was the final weekend of (bicycle) road races in our statewide series. The team I ride with and do some coaching for won the series for the 2nd year in a row. We had almost twice as many points as the next team. I can't take much credit for this result, but I'm happy to be part of a team that is both friendly and fast!

Dave's Top Gun win is huge, though. I'm so proud!

I think the paper hospital outfit adds something extra special to our team photo. He broke a rib and maybe dislocated his shoulder right before the start of his race. Ouch!

No, only one team member has a Kirk (me). I think everyone else has carbon or aluminum stock bikes.

OK Dave K, so when do you go to the Tire Rack SCCA Championships?

I hear KS is nice (Really? Noone's kidding us, right?) this time of year !!

For me it was an HP Frogeye, a couple of D-13 and D-13S Formula Vees, and a couple of turns in an MR2 in The Firestone Firehawk Series.

Solo 2 was just a bit to difficult for me to wrap my feeble brain around. :D

But you do have a cool set of wheels for a cool guy.
