This made me just wonder, do I get a tax break for having a commute only from one side of the house to the other? No more 52 mile roundtrip commutes for me! Only downside is the dog snoring so loudly at times he can be heard over the phone.

What do I have to do to get my tax break?

Let's see... we've got an obesity epidemic (whose total costs down the road make this annual budget look like pocket change), we've got burgeoning traffic congestion, smog, global warming, and...

And did I see $1 million total to support bike commuting?

I wonder if this guy gets any lobbying money from the oil companies and the automakers. Or if he's just innately stupid and short-sighted.

And of course, he won't take messages from anyone outside his district. :butt:

See page 33-34 of http://www.house.gov/jct/x-35-07.pdf

IF your employer compensates you for bicycle commuting, then you can exclude the amount (within limits) from your gross income.

Sort of a shaft - I've heard of employers offering subsidies for mass-transit use, but never of one that benefits bike commuters.

Anyone?

Just saw this article after reading the congressman's comments:

http://en.autos.sympatico.msn.ca/guides_and_advice/article.aspx?cp-documentid=4373507

world's fastest car:

Bugatti EB 16.4 Veyron – 407 km/h (253 mph) +, 0-100 km/h: 2.5 sec.

More fun stats include emptying the 100-litre fuel tank in 11 minutes at maximum velocity –

Or if he's just innately stupid and short-sighted.

Maybe he is but what he says is reflective of his party's policies. The problem is not that we use too much energy, it's that we just need MORE! :crap:

I'm gonna crack open a cold bottle of aquafina and toast the good congressman from NC.

DaimlerChrysler CEO Dieter Zetsche has diagnosed many people with a new disorder: "eco-schizophrenia." It's a dangerous disorder -- and apparently highly contagious.

The disease afflicts journalists who demand energy-saving cars in their articles but then order the turbo versions for themselves when they test drive the cars. But the symptoms are widespread on the top floors of automobile industry headquarters too.

CEOs are ordering the development of especially energy-efficient engines, but they are using the new technology mainly to improve engine capacity. In 2005, for example, BMW had the most powerful three-cylinder diesel engine (300 horsepower), until the company was trumped by Mercedes (314 horsepower). Then Mercedes was overtaken by Audi (329 horsepower). Now BMW is leading the race again -- with 329 horsepower. The competition prompted the weekly Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung newspaper to ask: "Where will it end?"

The answer: With a 1,001 horsepower fairy tale. That's the engine capacity of the Bugatti Veyron, whose development cost Volkswagen several hundred million euros. The super sports car has its own way of solving the problem of obtaining enough gas: It's equipped with the fastest fuel injection pump in the world.

I walk to work ..... do I get a tax break fo 20 frn?
How bout if I ride my bike outa the driveway? then walk ?

Another law that is completely unenforceable.

More Government is always the solution, not personal responsibility.

Next is taxing and inspecting the bikes that we ride to work.
After all, they must be safe. It won't be long before all bikes are mandated
to have license plates and be registered. That will raise ton of frns to be
wasted by government inefficiency.
