Does anyone ride DA10 with a FSA Carbon Crank?
How about DA 9 on a DA 10 Crank?
The aluminum sleeve came loose in my kestrel frame after 13 years and 72,000 miles so I got a new Olmo with DA10. I also bought a refrub Kestrel and I'm trying to decide weather to put my DA 9 and FSA crank or if I can mix it up.
Thanks

i have DA 10 and an FSA crank on my IF. i wanted to run compact gearing, and shimano doesn't have compact gears for DA 10 yet. sort of. a shimano rep said that in japan they have 50s for DA 10. he ordered me one. so apparently with some work you can go compact with a DA 10 crank. but my FSA is sweet. its plenty stiff for my power output. go DA 10. much sweeter than DA 9. you'll be happy.

Ah, a 50t large chainring does NOT make a DA 10 crank a "compact" crank. A compact crank is usually defined as a crank that has chainrings with a smaller bolt circle diameter like 110bcd that will allow the small/inner chainring to go as low as 33t or 34t.

In contrast, Shimano's standard bcd for its crankset is 130bcd which will allow you a small chainring of only 38t. Campy's bcd is 135 and allows a only a 39t small chainring.

Putting a 50t chainring on a DA 10 crankset will probably give you a 50/39. What are the chainrings on your FSA crank? If its something like 50/34 or 50/36, then you probably have a "compact crank".

I love my DA 10 with the FSA compact crank on my Calfee. Works great for me and the compact crank has saved my knees. What a difference between Ultegra 9 and DA 10. Well worth the money for me. :D

bfd--yes, i was sloppy with my wording. sort of. right now, i'm running 50/34 on my FSA. and yes, with a DA you could run a 50/39. a 34 is proving to be undergeared for most roads, with the exception of steeper climbs. i kinda wish i was running something bigger than a 34 on my FSA. in the future, i'll try to be more precise with the terms "compact gearing" and "compact cranks."

Your FSA crank sounds like it has 110bcd. If the 34t appears to be "undergeared", you should try out a 36t. In fact, I believe Tyler H. was using a 50/36 in last year's tour.

110bcd chainrings are plentiful, so you shouldn't have a problem finding a 36t.

bfd--i'm actually searching for a 36. salsa apparently makes 'em. and a 50/36 could be a perfect combo. 53/39s are so dominant, shops have kinda slim pickin's outside of that. maybe it will change as more folks go for FSAs.

Climbpal,
TA makes a 36 in the 110bcd. peterwhitecycles.com is the place or bikespecialties (mike barry).

I ride 46/36 or 48/36 on most everything nowadays.

Climb;

FSA makes a 36T and a 38T for the Compact cranksets.

They are both in stock at Bay Road Bikes in Hamilton, MA if you need one right away.

was the FSA combo Tyler ran in the TdF last year on several stages. A 50/36 would provide better gear spacing, so go TA Syrius if that's what you are looking for. With my DA 9 I run a PMP Microroad setup (48-34, 12X27).

Personally, I am considering waiting for the new Campy compact for my Italian-equipped steed. The option for a 34X29, even at the expense of a having "only" a 50-13 up top would be worth it for some rides. Otherwise, a 50/36 or 48/34 12-25 would be just dandy. I find that a 48-12 or 53-13 is plenty of top end for me, and a 34X27 or 39x29 gives me a reasonable climbing gear -- though I find I reach for the Serotta with the 34X27 for tough DCs.

Good luck!

Based on what I've seen on other forums (e.g., ibob list, rec.bike.tech, etc.), I would be very, very careful dealing with Kai Matsuda/momovelo. Basically, once you order, he can be very nonresponsive and slow in shipping your order, if he does so at all.

People have complained of waiting *months* without receiving a thing. Yet, their credit card gets charged immediately. Some never receive their order and end up having to go through their credit card company to get their money back. Not good!

Although he carries some eclectic stuff, he appears to have questionable "business practice".....

Kai is indeed not fast in shipping... I waited about 10 days to receive everything I ordered. I think a better way to deal with him is to ask whether the things you want are in stock before you make any order. He did answer my questions fast (before I made the order) though... :D
