View Full Version : Rode a retro ride today

I cleaned off tons of cob webs off the 1990 Colnago Master. I decided that since today was an easy ride day, why not take the Master out for a spin. The SLX tubing is so smooth and fairly stiff for older steel. Shifting on the bike is as smooth as silk. I forgot this bike had the only set of clinchers on any of my bikes and they rode like clinchers. I have a set of record hubed Mavic rimmed wheel set on an old De Rosa that I'll switch over. I didn't push because tomoorow I have a very dificult training ride but on the flats the bike can be really fast. Here's some pics.

Jack, do you post pictures of your bikes just to torture us?

I mean, everything you have is so drool worthy … you could start your own (bike) porn site.

BTW, what's that on the trainer?

Weisan,

Please don't tell anybody. This is just a quick trip back into time. You know I'm a carbon Ti kind of rider. Since I will taking on a new Vanilla, I thought I'd check out the steel thing.

She doesn't realize it but she should be proud to sleep in the same crate that Jack's dog has. :o

As for the bike collection, well I'm afraid we just can't match up to the Brunks.

And if you ever want to sell those dt shifters and rear der...well, I'm yer boy, Jack. Nice ride and I particularly like that the little top tube man isn't there...remember him?

BTW, this bike looks totally modern to me, what's retro about it? ;-)

You may want to check the recall notice on that stem. If it's a first gen Modolo I would think twice about going more than say 10 MPH...

Yep as I have a NOS Master X Light frame sitting in my ofice with the little guy on the top tube.

The bike is retro to me as I'm not use to the down tube shifters and 7 speed gearing.

I have that same stem on my old Cannondale. I purchased it to replace an old Nitto stem that was too long AND I wanted it to match the Modolo Ergo bars that came stock on the bike in 1989. I think I got the stem around 1994 or 1995. I've ridden this stem a bit and had zero problems with it. How can ya tell if it's a 1st generation stem? What kind of failures have occurred with this stem?

Thanks,
Mike in AR

This Modolo stem was split behind the handlebar opening, but the handlebar clamp bolt was separate from the expander bolt. The lower part of the split stem extension carried the full load, and was further severely weakened by the large, counterbored hole for the handlebar clamp bolt. The stem failed at the bolt hole. Progress to failure was speeded by the use of triathlon handlebars, whose long forward reach places greater than usual bending loads on the stem.

Hey, there's that same dog back there in the same place as in the pictures of Jack's Look, Cervelo and Titus. What's with that dog? (S)he gets in every single picture! Different pose but same spot. Is (s)he a publicity hound? :D

I have some older steel bikes that I have upgraded the components on and when I ride them all I can think is that of steel came tomorrow it would be all the rage!
