i just bought a new ottrott with 12/25 sprocket. Will this be much different performance from my previous 13/26 sprocket? Which one is better for what? Thanks for the stupid question.

the difference is 1 tooth, i think? :)

you can compare what that means here:

_IF_ your new Ottrott is lighter than your previous bike, you likely won't notice much of a difference. The 'new' gears are slightly bigger (both top gear and bottom gear) and you 'may' be able to push a slightly larger gear with the now-lighter bike. It appears that you don't have a compact front chainring set. If your Ottrott came with compacts, THAT would make a larger difference in your gearing options.

The 12-25 has one more top gear (the 12), which is 8% higher. The difference at the low end is a much smaller 4%.

The other difference is the 13-26 includes an 18T cog, if it's a 10 speed. The 13-26 might be better for flatter terrain, where the 12 wouldn't see much use on extended downhill runs and the 18T can be useful in filling the 17-19 gap. I switched to cassettes with no 18T cog (12-25 10 speed) seven years ago and found that I rarely miss it.

I've run a 12-25 and 13-26 on different bikes and find there are some differences but most of which I consider to be differences in the bike more so than the cassette. One being an aluminum frame/stiff wheel and the other a steel frame and Open Pro wheel.

A lot depends on what chainrings you match those cassettes up with. A 44x12 gives you the same gear as a 48x13 (and a 52x14).
