View Full Version : Johnny Cash goes high

Biggish ride today.
I got kicked out of bed at 4:30 for an emergency at the hospital, came home at 6:30, and decided to not go back to bed, instead taking advantage of the cooler temperatures.
I cimbed the Sanetsch pass, a small road that goes between Sion and Gstaad (actually doesn't as there are 2 miles missing on top).
4760ft elevation in 16 miles, with sections at 15% grade.
I am glad I took Johnny Cash, as the triple was necessary. I did the steepest parts in the 30X26, keeping the 29 as a bailout (didn't need it). A hiccup in preparation meant I did the ride on 1 large bottle only, and had to ration myself a bit. Boy am I thirsty now!
The view is very interesting, esp. once you get above the tree line.
Anyway, this thread is worthless without pics!

Wow!
Thanks for sharing.
That sounds like an idyllic ride. Nice selection on the bike, as well as the route. The glacial geology is pretty impressive too. Wow, do I want to bring my road bike to the Swiss Alps!

Did you make it all the way to Gstaad? Or does the missing section of road preclude that?

Must be that stand-up and take notice scenery...

People shouldn't have to ride in such conditions!

Karin (an anyone from the forum, actually), come around and I will show you a few places. Bring a triple!

Did not make it to Gstaad. Needed other pedals to walk/carry over the unpaved section. And, I was out of food, drink and money.

Kevan, Johnny Cash never put a knee to the ground. ;)

MO-TI-VATION!

Wow, is that ever lovely.

Is it dry is Gstaad? Because it is raining like the devil in Chambéry, and I need more clear days.

I only brought a 39/32 as my lowest gear, and I need to work it. Jealous of Mr. Cash's range.

Thanks for sharing insight into an amazing world.

i've never seen someone paint such things on their garage door. that must have taken a long time, you are a very skilled and patient artist.

George!! Your pix remind me of those I took on my "trip of a lifetime" 11-day hike around Mont Blanc in July '98. Switzerland and the Alps are so gorgeous I can't believe I've only been there once. Envy, envy, envy. Also envy your Johnny Cash! Beautiful set up on that Hors, and you certainly have the right bike to ride these passes. Again--additional envy envy envy! I could not ride up that road even with your Johnny Cash! I would have bailed at that lovely inn for some nice cold beer and sat on the porch watching you do the rest of the climb.

OK, I'll put a triple on my birthday list.
I would love to take you up on that offer. I'm already scheming for next year's trip!

The base of the Col du Forclaz on Sunday.

Definitely wished that I had a velo or moto to play with.

What a great area around Mt. Blanc.

Switzerland is beautiful.

Your Hors looks fantastic - I dig the setup.
