a friend (really) has a bike that came equipped with a triple.
he bought a double crank and wants to install without changing shifters.
the shifter in question is a shimano 105 triple brake/shifter.
can't it just be adjusted to work using the limiter screws?

Yes, set the front derailleur limit screws and shorten the cable to eliminate the extra shift.

If the cables aren't shortened, he will have many trim positions, not a really big deal. He *should* adjust the height of the dérailleur so it's correct on the big ring. If he does that, and adjusts the dérailleur correctly, no worries.

You didn't mention it but I hope he's getting a new bottom bracket too.
