3D XL - when did this start?

I remember a thread about this a while back but have searched for it and come up blank. When did Serotta start with the 3DXL dropouts? What did they look like before? If someone knows where the old thread is at, that would probably be just fine...

The older 3d dropouts were cupped and have a small hole, about 3/16th of an inch in diameter in the center of the cup at the rear end of each stay.

Larry here in Dallas. I love my new CDA. Everything is so right!!!

My 1998 CSi had the old style dropouts. They were fine.
What was the reason, if any, that Serotta moved to the 3DXL style dropouts?
Stronger? More distinctive?
Serotta exclusive? Function?
