I was killing time looking at a recent ride I'd done with imaging from Google Earth. I was in this view (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=http%3A%2F%2Ftrail.motionbased.com%2Ftrail% 2Fkml%2Fepisode.kml%3FepisodePkValues%3D2988857&ie=UTF8&ll=44.666089,-93.227577&spn=0.066538,0.127201&t=k&z=13&om=1) when something caught my eye. Maybe it's because I'm an air traffic controller which caused me to pick up on this...I don't think so...do you see it? Here's a closer look (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=http%3A%2F%2Ftrail.motionbased.com%2Ftrail% 2Fkml%2Fepisode.kml%3FepisodePkValues%3D2988857&ie=UTF8&t=k&om=1&ll=44.660305,-93.213973&spn=0.008318,0.0159&z=16) at what I'm referring to. Pretty cool. This is just south of MSP in a left bank on the Kaspr arrival...looks to be setting up for a southeast approach.

"honey ... do you have a feeling that we're being .... watched?"

How on earth did you see that in the original view. I'm looking at the two side by side, and there's no way I can see a tiny dot in all that from the original zoom.

They're always talking about things like this at airliners.net. Check out the departures over the ocean at LAX. Since the pics are taken at different times, there's even one of two planes on the same runway, but I can't remember where...

That is an incredible photo. I use Google earth for work and as much as I hate computers in some ways, things like this make me smile.

You can almost see the pilot!!

You can almost see the pilot!!

Is the pilot the fat dude in the green bathing suit??

Anyway, that is amazing imagery (no, not the fat dude). I love Google Earth and other forms of satellite images or aerial photography.
Quite amazing to spot that airplane, onekgguy - very cool!

If you want to see something really cool, go to Bikely.com, and map one of your favorite rides (you have to register...It's free), or just pick someone else's route. Then, go to the "Share" menu at Bikely, and save the route to your hard drive as a *.KLM (Google Earth) file. Then, open the klm file in Google Earth, and hit the "play" button. It will do a satellite image flyover of the route. It is especially cool if you exaggerate the terrain (to 2 or 3) in the preferences in GE. It is also a good way to check out routes that you haven't ridden before.

Does it strike anyone or is it just me that the perspective is all wrong here? I get the feeling that the airliner must much closer to the sattelite than the surface of the earth? If so, how can that be? There are a lot of known anomalies in Google Earth. Could this also be one?

I realize I have had a bit much red wine tonite but if the surface of the earth was closer to the camera than the plane would that not be known as a CRASH!

Most of googleearth's high resolution photos are actually taken from planes.

That's true, John. Every now and then I'll work the planes which take the photos as a part of my job. They usually take the photos from around 21,000 feet and work a grid pattern for hours at a time.

While it is not google earth, you should take a look at google directions:

Take 60 seconds (or less) to do this, It is pretty funny. I like #21 :)

1. go to www.google.com
2. click on "maps," above the search bar...
3. click on "get directions"
4. type "New York" in the first box (the "from"box)
5. type "Paris", or any major European city, in the second box (the "to" box)
6. click on "get directions"
7. scroll down to step #21

Note that these directions are "for planning purposes only..." :))

That's great! I love the idea that these programmers still have a sense of humor and aren't afraid to let it show!
