from today's cyclingnews:

"The average speed of the stage (#16) was 33.940 km/h. In total, it makes an average of 37.075 km/h for the Giro thus far, which is far from the 41 plus of the Tour de France although the terrain is different."

the optimist in me hopes it means a cleaner giro. what's very heartening is... the racing has been great, very exciting, unpredictable, dramatic, very open... just plain good.

maybe it will help the powers that be realize that clean(er) can be good(er). ;) personally i've enjoyed this giro more, far more, than many "faster" tours.

I think the biggest indicator was the day they were nearly halfway through a stage and had a 16.4 mph average going. A rest day on the bike. Maybe its getting a lot harder to mask the drugs that contribute to recovery?

Soft-pedaling (relatively speaking of course).

The racing has been very different this year, which ought to cast a bit of doubt on whether the speed differential is "clean" versus not "clean." This fact is especially true when comparing to the Tour, even allowing for the terrain difference. For the Tour, especially during the LA era, but even last year, teams were often driving the peloton. This year, the efforts have been more individualistic. Even with doping the same, the difference in the team make up and tactics could lead to substantially different times, I would imagine.
