I am bothered by the 42 middle ring on my (square taper) Record triple, would like to replace it with a 39 or 40.

Anyone knows wether the double and triple share the same BCD??

Thanks!

The standard double and triple are booth 135mm. You can find replacements quite easily although you might have to hunt around for a 39 or 40t middle ring with pins and ramps to aid shifting from the small to middle ring.

I believe that Campy did offer a 50-40-30 triple at one time.

I believe that 40 is the smallest middle ring the Campy Triple will accept.

I ditched the whole Campy 53/42/30 setup and installed a a TA Zephyr ...
My Rings are 48/36/22. The Zephyr will accomodate rings from 20 to 58.
Have it your way. The Zephyr's replacement is the Carmina.

Check out Peter White Cycles.

Why should Campy dictate your rings !!!!! Why is Campy smarter then you?

Thanks guys.
I also realised that the rings are "coded" e.g. the outer 52 says 52/42, to signify ramp compatibility. I am not going to let myself be bothered by all this, else I may as well ditch th ewhole setup...

Now off to find a 39 or 40 ring.

Maybe because I am old and use to ride a 42, the triple combo does not cause me much re-learning when I go from it to a bike with 39. Give it a try, if you do n[o like, you can sell the parts on the forum and go to a double.

I have Campy with 52-39-30 triple.

Shifts fine.

Pete,
I got so used to the 39/53 over the years that the 42 drives me nuts. I end up in the small ring out of spite at not finding my usual rythm, even if the slope does not warrant this.
The triple is on Johnny Cash (the Hors Cat), and all my other road bikes have the 39/53 combo.

I can easily give up the 53 for a 52, but that 42 is a nonsense to me.

I just found a 39, so we'll see :)

Check out Peter White's Chain-ring page.

For the Ultimate in flexibility and options, consider a TA Carmina Crank.
Unfortunately, TA discontinued the Zephyr !!! DUH !!!!

I also detested the 42 ring. Never made any sense to me either,
especially on a Triple setup.

I also detested the 42 ring. Never made any sense to me either,
especially on a Triple setup.I'm completely opposite. With a 30T as a backup, I prefer the tighter gearing that the 42T offers.

The fact that Shimano quit offering the 42T middle ring has kept me from buying their new triple.

Goerge let me know how the 39 shifts because I would rather have
that also. Elefantino, where did you get you 39? If it specifically for a triple or wil the double work. THANKS

39 is a double and it works fine.

FWIW I like the 42 in the middle. You can live on it most of the time, shifting to the little ring when the hills are big and the big ring when there's a downhill or tailwind.

FWIW I like the 42 in the middle. You can live on it most of the time, shifting to the little ring when the hills are big and the big ring when there's a downhill or tailwind.I prefer the larger 42T also, but have to admit that if my needs were different, I’d consider changing also. As an example, if I could spin faster, used a different cassette, and/or rode a little slower to the point where the bigger 42T forced me into the first two-tooth jump in the cassette on a regular basis (i.e. – 17T to 19T), then I would look into the smaller 39T middle ring.

IMO it’s not that one is better than another, just different to meet different needs. It’s interesting though that Shimano has gone to a 39T on all their new triples (making the jumps equal) while Campy has larger middle rings, making the jumps uneven.
