I'm installing a new chain on a DA10 group and noticed the upper pulley (tension) has lateral (axial) play and the lower pulley (guide) doesn't. The bearing seems to be Ok and after looking everything over it may be that the lateral play is normal so it doesn't impact the alignment role of the guide pulley. So is the lateral (axial) play normal? Thanks in advance.

Yes the lateral play in the top pulley wheel is normal. Shimano design that in to account for and allow a little misalignment of the derr setup, to maximize shifting performance. There is nothing wrong with your rear derrailleur.

I'll assert what BdaGhisallo said; the upper pulley is designed to float laterally so it will align with the cog for the quietest operation.

this is a big shimano patent issue.
a key patent that has made it more difficult for other companies to perfect their own systems.

sram got around this in a strange way; the whole rear derailleur has play from side to side. seems to work though...

Senor' Campy marks the upper pulley and the spacer creates the movement same as Shimano. What's the beef?
