Kelly Benefit Strategies/Medifast ready for Richmond

Fresh from a top ten overall place at Redlands, the first-year Kelly Benefit Strategies/Medifast team announced its roster Thursday for the US Open Cycling Championships April 7 in Richmond, Virginia.

American Dan Bowman, who finished seventh overall in the Redlands Bicycle Classic, will lead the team in the 112 mile road race. He'll be joined by Dominique Perras (Can), Martin Gilbert (Can), Reid Mumford (USA), Jonny Sundt (USA), Justin Spinelli (USA) and rising talents Nick Waite (USA) and Ryan Roth (Can).

"This is a big race for us," said Jonas Carney, performance director and former pro road racer. "It's a great, tough field to test our roster. With the TV coverage this race attracts, it's also a fantastic opportunity to show race fans all over the country at home exactly what a well-managed, first year team riding hard for the finish line can do." The race will be televised live from 2:30 to 5:00 pm on NBC.

Hopefully the local NBC affiliate won't preempt it for Duck pin bowling or a Crab Cake cook off. :crap: That would be Awful Awful.

I am waiting for my connection flight now. Maybe all the cold weather training done will help. Should be 30 degrees tomorrow!

It was the wind. Non stop full throtle in the field. The climb was almost like a relief.

Too bad, I'm pretty sure I'm not the only forumite hoping you would rip their legs off.

That Canadian pushed hellish gears in that wind. Sundt got his face into it a lot too. Enjoyed the race and cant imagine how hard it must have been...

Great watching knowing one of the fold was in the race. Get em next time man!

Looked pretty brutal for a while there. Nice attack on the cobble climb for the win. He just rode him off his wheel. :bike:

Looked to be a brutal race. The winner was pedaling squares at the end, and all 3 looked to hobble on to the podium.
Mad props to all who were in there.

Anyone else bummed out by how gross the roads were? The guys were being thrown all over the place by bumps, asphalt patches, and nasty stuff on the road.

And the gutters on the cobble sections looked like they hadn't been swept. Weeds, sand, and debris all over. They were gutters.

Cobbles are one thing, but nasty, uncared for roads are another.

Richmond has some beautiful streets. And tons of cobble. Like Monument Avenue.

But the race was run through urban construction sites.

The announcers were falling over themselves about what a great day it was for US cycling. I thought that the organizers couldn't even get a decent loop downtown. Not ready for prime time.
