View Full Version : OT: car insurance
I'm just curious to what some of you pay for car insurance. I know that there are a number of variables that can contribute your premiums. I'm just looking for and idea, that's all. Age, Location, marital status, driving record, types of cars, and homeownership.

100/300/100 coverage, $500 ded. full coverage. I have been with State Farm for 7 years. Multiple line discount for Home and Life. I am currently paying $268 a month for everything. I recently got a quote from a Farmers agent, for $159 a month for identical coverage. Do I switch, or do I stay with State Farm? I would rather pay more something that is better if it is needed, if that helps.

Get a quote from Progressive too, they use your credit score, so the ticket might not be a big deal to them.
I don't think there's much loyality with auto insurance.

I was with Allstate and Farmers came in with better coverage on my house and autos so even though I'm paying more on the car, I'm paying much less overall...
but I haven't put a claim in, and hope never to have to...only because I don't like the reason you make claims...

I'd recommend calling an independent insurance agency to see what they can do for you - they should be able to place coverage for you with a number of companies and then in the event that you have a claim, they can work with you from that side as well. Much better than buying direct from a company and the same if not lower premiums from an independent agent. To find one in your state do a search of Arizona Independent Insurance Agents Association to find members in your area.
I'd quote it for you but am in Texas and therefore we represent Texas risk - though we are licensed in many states, and may hold an AZ license.. Looks like you are buying appropriate limits and good coverage, so let an independent agent place the business for you. You might also look into a personal umbrella policy. PM if there is anything I can do further.

First, I'd recommend that you increase your deductible to $1000, it can make a significant difference. Also what daily/weekly/monthly or yearly mileage are you being charged for. Check, find out and adjust if it's too high.
Shop Allstate, they often have the best rates if you give them all your car/home insurance. I've been with them for over 20 years, shop them every year to keep them honest. I'm satisfied.

Huey,
Really...shop your policy around. Yes, it's a pain, but just see what coverage who will provide at what cost.
An item to think about from a personal injury lawyer I know: Personal injury insurance on your auto policy really doesn't cost that much. Put as much as you can afford on you and your passengers. You never know when you might be in an accident with someone who has no insurance at all or very low coverage that may not take care of catastrophic issues or reasonable extended care that may be required.

That situation you describe would hit your Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist limits, not the PIP, though I do agree that the PIP limit should be there and be the highest allowed by the company. Most offer $2500 but some will go to $5000 per person PIP.
Also - depending on the definition of "significant" raising your ded. from 500 to 1000 isn't going to do much for you other than cost you an additional $500 right off the top if you have a claim, and maybe more.....would you turn in a $1350 claim knowing that you have a $1000 ded.? A lot of people would look at the estimate and just decide to eat the extra 350. That higher ded. just cost you an extra $850 in that event. Call your local independent agent for more exciting details! ;) :)

consumer reports listed AMICA as the #1 insurance company for customer service and value. www.amica.com - for me anyway = great rates, great service, doing business in all 50 states (at least the 48 anyway) they also write property and life. I live on an island so they wont write my homeowners policy.
good luck
Thank you everyone for your replies. I am going to do some shopping around and see what other quotes that are available.
As a side note, I am a service consultant at an Audi dealer and have some first hand with insurance companies.

You might want to also ask you agent about increasing your liabilty coverage.. Theses day100/300 is not very much IMO - granted it is up there beyond the minimum but for a few more dollars you might choose more. $100K in medical expenses per person is not much with $300K max for all medical. So given 5 people in a car accident where you are at fault you will be liable for all expenses above $300K. That is only $60K per person.
Also-- my preference only but I will mention. I lowered my Comprehensive to $200 due to the number of windshields cracked from road rocks. I have paid less out of pocket money. I had a Deer colision which is under Comprehensive and and windshields replaced - $600- $800 range. Anyway food for thought.. Happy driving.
I am single have 3 cars, used Allsate for 20+years - both home and auto, They allow me to suspend my coverage on my cars so I only pay for the SUV during winter - the other 2 sit safely with Comprehensive only and when the sun comes out, a phone call lets me drive the fun car for the day and then I put it back to sleep till the next sunny day. Summer comes the SUV sits safely with just comprehensive. Cheers
