I've been commuting between Pittsburgh and Seattle for work over the past five years and I finally had the chance to spend a few days in the Portland area.
You folks who live there should be proud of your city, as I found the people to be hip, friendly, and the geography is just gorgeous. More bikes per capita than I have seen outside of Europe and China.

Make a side trip to Vancouver BC for a long weekend with your bike. Best cycling city in North America.

it's just an illusion. it rains far too much here to enjoy cycling at all. Vanilla, Ira Ryan, Pieria - don't really exist here. They are all actually located somewhere off the Harbor freeway in LA. Don't believe the hype.

Portland is a hell hole. Stay away.
P.S. I can be reached at my new number in the 503 area code...PM me for details. If I don't answer I am likely out riding my bike, drinking delicious beer or working in my municipal garden patch.

Except for the weekend of the BC Randonneurs Fleche when there's guaranteed to be a deluge all through the nights as well.

I remember that one nice day we had back in July of 1991. My wife and I went down and hung out on the banks of the Willamette river. There were only three water spouts that day, and it only raind about 3.5 inches. Ahhh, memories... :)

I think Dave Seleski gave the day an 8.5 on the "HO" meter. "WEEK-END HOOOOOOO!!!"

I should add that I got lost in Stumptown and ended up in this obscure place where they were crafting bike frames. It started with a "V"........
