Alcohol sales have been sky high since the pandemic started. I think I see a correlation.

It's pretty simple the Ever Given is one of only 13 ships that size of 400m. It is the maximum length allowed in the canal, and I think it needs special permission to enter.

It sounds like this incident is with a different sized vessel and not nearly as serious. I bet if you looked at canal logs, these types of incidents aren't that uncommon.

It was just the massive size of the Ever Given which caused the cluster eff.

A lot of those ship's captains are former NASCAR drivers. Sometimes they can't help themselves and turn left.

Already saw this and yes, they're blaming Biden for it.

Actually should be Carter, for giving away the Panama Canal.

Strong and steady wind from one side against a large surface (long tall ship ~ basically a large sail)? Di2 "crash mode"? Adverse reaction to ivermectin? Our alien lizard overlords toying with us? Has global warming caused the Bermuda Triangle to shift to the Suez Canal?

Probably wouldn't have happened with rim brakes. Jes sayin'...

Weird. It's clearly Trumps' fault. :fight: :)

poorly written clickbait conflating several events.

The recent grounding lasted 15 minutes and did not disrupt schedules.

It's the third grounding this year, with the major one involving Ever Given being the major one that disrupted worldwide shipping.

Not an unusual situation. No need to make a big deal of these situations.

Why would a captain take a ship that size outside of the shipping lane?

That's like a semi truck driver thinking he can make a low bridge and can't.

OR

An Italian cruise ship captain thinking he can get close to shore to show off to his friends... and can't.

I've driven ships through there, the channels and traffic scheme are very well defined.

The 1,095-foot container vessel—known as the Ever Forward—ran aground about 9 p.m. Sunday in the Craighill Channel, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

... because the ship's captain loves irony?

The ship in the Chesapeake bay got stuck almost a month ago. I assume it's gone now?

I saw it a couple of weeks ago. As far as I know it's still stuck.

As usual, they were waiting for a really high tide, maybe suctioning some of the bottom sand out, etc. Per the article below they finally conceded that they'd have to unload some of the containers, which can't be an easy or fast process on the water. Back when 7 speed cassettes were still a hot item, I used to be involved in some marine construction with cranes on barges in the water (replacing bridge spans), but this is a bit different. The good news is that the containers almost certainly weigh less than a bridge span.

Looks like they were going to try again Saturday (two days ago). I haven't read whether it was freed or not.

This barge has been sitting on one of our city's downtown beaches since last November. It almost become a permeant fixture!

Bay pilot was in command. The owner has declared "general average" which means that all of the cargo owners share in the cost of refloating. NPR has a story about a couple who's entire household belongings are in one of those containers (they were moving).

That channel is crazy well marked, as noted above. It does go rapidly from 40 odd feet in the channel to 24 outside, but there's no reason to be there. I can only suspect that these super giant container ships present unique windage issues to their crew.

Even tho in the 'navy', I wonder how they intend to 'refloat'? Take cargo off?

Google-foo says draft of these ships is 47 to 51 feet...how they get into the channel that is only 40 feet deep? Minimum ay low tide?

Dredging and cargo offload...ahh...
