I'll volunteer to lead a ride is anyone is interested. there's one in particular that takes about 2 hours, is urban so you can see the city, but uses lots of bike paths to avoid cars.

I spent a summer in Portland back in 1999 working on a movie and I was truly impressed by what a bike friendly place it is (unlike Los Angeles).

Bike routes with signage

Bike routes in between freeways

People not hostile towards riders

Just a great place to ride (in the summer, when its not raining)

one of the reasons why it's such a great place to ride, is the amount of rainfall it receives. It's lush green and beautiful. They tried to do the same thing to LA by completely diverting the Colorado River.

+1, I am not depressed though. We still got a lot of fun in Ramble, D2R2, Nottrott, and Serotta Open house here on the East coast.

Len,

As much as I wanted ( I really did try!) to get the show on the east coast for 08, it just wasnt in the cards. Providence RI is a nice place, has a great venue and plenty of local hotels. However, they seemed really indifferent in having us host the show there. The hotels wouldnt negotiate a decent price and the CC just wanted a signed contract. Seemed like more sales than
anything else. I dont want to chance a bad show in an unproven location.

Portland has been actively pursuing us since last year. They are genuinely excited about NAHBS coming there and are actually doing things to help us for the next show. They have a big cycling populus and a staff of city employees that practice what they preach about cycling. IMHO, Portland will be an even bigger, better show than San Jose, by far!

Now, I am looking into 09 and yes, I am seeking locations back east. Before folks start yelling out their favorite or closest city, there are many things I have to consider.
1. Air Travel ease
2. Hotel Cost/location
3. Hall Cost
4. Union hall? (sorry folks, I will lose exhibitors if it is a union hall. No one that exhibits except for maybe Shimano really need any help with their freight)
5. local food/fare
6. cycling community?

etc, etc. etc.

the list goes on and on. Anyhow, thats how I narrow down my choices for locations.

I guess the real question is, "how far are you willing to travel for a weekend of fun?"

That is why we have not met face to face, But I would like to meet you, and ride with most I have met here, via the keyboard. I would love to ride with you, and the other frame builders, but I certainly understand the business constraints of such an event. I will there. Perhaps we might ride around the display area.

Boston gets my vote. Good airport, a couple of different convention centers to choose from, and access to a strong New England cycling community.

Honorable mention - Minneapolis.

Not Providence. I got too many parking tickets when I was a student there and I can never go back or they'll boot my car!

Have it in Denver. National Western Complex would be good for the show. Centrally located to both coasts. Super strong cycling community, good food, good bars, decent airport (with terrible architecture), skiing/boarding that time of year if you want to make a vacation of it. I guess that settles it, Denver in '09!

Its funny you mention that, there are a lot of transplants here, to the dismay of the natives. The more indignant natives display their oregon heritage with bumper stickers that say "native" against a backdrop of an OR license plate. I've been looking for a "native new yorker via california" sticker, but I guess they don't make those.

We've got Oregon beat when it comes to xenophobia. I used to see a lot of these in my Boston neighborhood:
