View Full Version : rebecca twigg atmo
Is it my imagination and/or poor reading skills that lead me to
see a glaring omission in the riders listed in the VeloNews 35th
anniversary edition's various mini-articles about those deemed,
"...heroes and innovators"?
Rebecca Twigg was not heralded at all. Her Wikipedia page alone
lists palmares that erase all doubt that she was one of the dominant
US riders (of either gender) since the magazine began its own storied
history.

has anyone received their issue? it
is packed with great stories about
movers and shakers going back to
the early 70s. twigg was a 6 time
world champ starting in the mid 80s.
to omit her in lieu of the others that
did get some ink is an oversight atmo.

My LBS had a poster of her on a Merlin and i would often just stand and stare at the poster.I thought about just stealing it and making a run for it.
Truly a great racer who deserves the ink.

She rode a Merlin
She had a nice smile
She had nice legs
She rode on the track
She ate wheaties
She won a lot
She quit riding and became a doctor
She was smart and went to college when she was 8 years old.
she was coached by Eddie B.
Eddie B. like his riders to eat lots of meat.
Alexi Grewal loved his Ginseng, and he rode a beaut of a pinarello painted red/wh/and blue- fade.
Steve Bauer is cool, was cool, will be cool..................except for his paris roubaix frame..................he got eddy merckx drunk and was allowed to build ride and brag about that atrocity.

I haven't seen the article. Have they actually cut Twigg from a who's-who list of U.S. cyclists? 6 worlds titles? Olympic medals in road and track? How big is the list?

Rebecca Twig is so much better looking. When I was about 15-16 I was at a crit and stuck around to watch the big boys ride and she headlined the women's event. WOW, the first beauty on a bike I'd seen. She must be about 4-5 years older than me. What a glaring omission.
She quit riding and became a doctor
I agree that Rebecca Twiggs was great, but did she really quit riding to become a doctor? If so, she's another Carol Addy:

She used one of my allen keys to tighten her seatpost right before a crit in Augusta, GA about twelve years ago. I still have the allen key. I should make a shrine. I always thought she would be taller.
She didn't seem to like riding crits and that was a nasty course with a chicane and painted crosswalks in the corners. She was either on the back or off the front.

so, you had a relationship with her.
how was it for her?
maybe she saved the seat binder.
you meant a lot to her at the time...i heard that then she just moved on to a guy with a bigger allen key cause her crank was falling off too.

I was at the 86 worlds in Colorado Springs. She would have had that title too if she hadn't crashed on that descent. She is clearly one of the all time greats in American cycling.

yes -
there is one vignette on carpenter and phinney
and one, i believe, on young and 1-2 others.
iirc the only mention twigg gets is in the article
about eddie b where a laundry list of his charges
appears atmo.

http://www.helmets.org/poster.htm
This poster features Rebecca Twigg, then a leading US female racer, buried in a pile of Pro-Tec helmets. The theme is "Rebecca wears ProTec or she wears nothing at all!" It was produced in the late 1980's. Although the wholesome athlete's smile on Ms. Twigg's face makes it clear that this was more a joke than a serious come-on, it was the earliest attempt we can remember to sell helmets with feminine appeal, and may have had a lot to do with Ms. Twigg subsequently winning a Bicycling Magazine award in that category.
The helmets shown are the Pro-Tec Mirage model, the first all-foam helmet with an internal reinforcing mesh, a major advance in helmet construction imitated by almost every manufacturer of high-end helmets since. It appeared in 1989, dating the poster in that era, when Pro-Tec was still headquartered in Kent, Washington. The nylon mesh extended across all vents, although it is obscured in this photo by the mesh covers. In the original poster you can see both the mesh and a small mole on Ms. Twigg's left shoulder that was not airbrushed out. Although some may quibble with the theme, we would rate this as one of the most innovative helmet posters ever produced, featuring one the most innovative helmets of that era.

early 80's in colorado springs there was a preseason 10 mile time trial east of town. I rode out to it to see what it was all about. There weren't many racers probably because it was so cold. I saw twigg there.
At any rate I remember she got beat by fred matheny by a handful of seconds.

Moveitfred used to suck wheel from Twigg along the San Gabriel riverbed when she motored home to Whittier back in the neon 80's.
She gave good pull, iirc.
She was my hero, and an innovator atmo.
