reading about and from dario regarding his current period and the influences on his new responsorium on this page (http://www.competitivecyclist.com/za/CCY?PAGE=PRODUCT&PRODUCT.ID=3668) got me wondering:

doesn't a handmade bicycle (or at least the portion that is built by the craftsman - frame, fork, perhaps stem or seatpost and, in some cases, custom brakes and other components) entirely reflect a craftsman's personality and state of mind? what could you say about the person who built your cycle based on the feeling you get looking at it or the experiences you have riding it?

sometimes yes, sometimes no. I know some framebuilders who are entirely unstable, but their frames are anything but.

The personality of the builder reflected on their work? You better believe it. I pestered Atmo so much for rushing my bike that this is what he built for me. He sent a cute note: "Here is your custom made bike. Just what you deserve, atmo."

Yes. Based on what I've done with my poor Serotta in it's first year of service I would have to conclude that Ben was abused as a child.

Or not - sorry Ben.

You can tell this bike was built by a Mexican artisan by the taco wheels.
