So says the NWS.

And the Saratoga 200 brevet is on Sunday! I was looking forward to riding the new route for this year up to Sacandaga Lake, and finishing near the Saratoga Monument. :crap:

You gotta love it.

Or else you end up moving to Florida because you lose your sanity.

Yesterday morning I took the studded tires off the cross/commuter, wore a wool jersey and lightweight jacket to ride to work and started pondering the vegetable garden.

Now I'm looking at moderate snow falling and sticking, and expecting a big dump of it Friday night.

Hillary ain't getting my vote! Least Netflix is delivering Casino Royale today.

We're being toyed with.

I watched Casino Royale last night, pushing the envelope of my subwoofer and 42" HDTV.

Best Bond movie yet, atmo, ymmv.

Hopefully this won't be a spoiler. But, sort of like Batman Begins, the gravitas conveyed by not making the hero idealized and invulnerable makes it much more watchable.

Got out of work early Monday because I felt like it, all the fun and games at work over the weekend needed to be spooled out on the road. I rode a nice quick 38 before getting home and cooking dinner.

I got out yesterday... 65 degrees they said. It wasn't quite that by the time I rode, more like 50 and the Snow Eating Fog was a good 10 degrees colder than the open air. That was a lot of fun, 34 miles up over Swart Hill and back down Rector.

Today was a full expression of my basic underlying stupidity. I have the day off so I decided I'd go up around Mariavillle. My hands were cold by the time I turned up Rynex, as I came toward the top it started to snow. It was windy, so ice pellets were whacking me in the side of the face as I crossed the top of the ridge. It stung. When I got toward the top of 160 (159? I forget) the snow was slushing up on the road. So, what to do? I know... turn left and go higher. Boy, were my hands hurting. Across to Duanesburg Churches to Batter Street and back into Mariaville. I was finding it very difficult to shift, at first because the whole bike was clogged with packed wet snow and then because my forearms and hands were numb and couldn't move the levers. So, what to do? I know... descend 160 at 40 miles an hour. That'll warm the old hands right up.

It was quite a bit warmer in the valley and I had a tailwind, that was some relief. 47 miles, average temp 36 degrees, snow and rain. What a great ride.

How those guys rode the Tour of Italy that day without warm clothes on is absolutely beyond me. I had a jacket, a polypro shirt and arm warmers on under it, amfib tights, wool socks under goretex socks with neoprene booties over the shoes, polypro skull cap under a goretex hat and some useless neoprene gloves and I was so hypothermic I almost made some really bad decisions in the last couple miles... I was actually confused I was so cold.

And now to the cellar. Ah, well.

Still hanging on to winter here too (corn snow, actually).

We lost all the snow in town on Monday with freakish temps in the 70s. Crazy with flooding and such. But now one can either ride or ski, which is a nice arrangement.

Dude! You're a better man than I! Being from southern NM, Winter (H*ll, spring, and fall) is not for me. That Hampsten Giro '88 ride always blows me away; Belgian strongmen stuff is to me super human!! No gloves thick enough!

Good ride today!

I'm betting that we're done with old man Winter out here in St Louis - I just got done taking the Blizzak snow tires/wheels off of my car. (Normally not something one would require in St Louis, but I live in an area with a few nasty little hills and my driveway sometimes turns into ice as the car packs it down.)

A few days ago it was up around 80* and we won't be south of freezing much anymore...

I've done quite a few rides this year w/ temps between 20-45 degrees, but no snow (actually, I rode a Saturday earlier this year and heard reports there were snow flurries in the afternoon in Tallahassee, but I somehow missed it?). So okay, I'll say it ;) ...I'm in North Florida approximately 11 miles from the Georgia border...day time temps have been mid 70-low 80's this week w/ nights around 45-50 degrees. I heard after the rain tonight we're supposed to get a touch of chilly weather again by the weekend. Hope it's not too cold, I'd prefer not taking the tights to the 400k this Saturday. :D

this was the view (http://youtube.com/watch?v=4QRT6Cr6gv8) of my world not long ago. i was back out on the roads just a few days after i shot this. that storm dumped 8" on us and 5 days later we had another come through which did the same. there's still some snow left but it's fading fast. it really is amazing how soon i can be back out riding after one of these storms. it speaks a lot to the folks in the big orange trucks who keep the roads clean...a tip of the hat to them.

I've got about 8 inches and an icy coating of sleet is now being applied on top. Got most of the shoveling done already for fear that tomorrow's typical shovel load will weigh in the neighborhood of 100 lbs per scoop.

It's official, tomorrow I'm staying in bed until 10.

Bikes are staying in this weekend.

We got about 9 inches of cold dry powder last night, on top of the old leftover frozen base we still have. Temp today low 20's.

Broke trail on the back country skis for 90 minutes this morning. True skiiers heaven. You know it's good when you're going downhill and a little cirrus wing of snow is forming over the ski tips.

Repeat performance tomorrow.

6" of snow - 1-2" of sleet, then a coating of ice on top rendered my snowblower practically useless. Oh my frickin' back!!!!! I'm too tired to hit the rollers as I had planned.

Just a week ago, I was *****ing about losing the snow. On Friday, I drove to Jiminy Peak at noon and skied for 10 hours (they have almost a full mountain of lights). I was one of about 20 skiers on the mountain. Each run was better than the next; come back after the lift and your tracks had already filled in. Last five runs were knee deep -- all of it fluffy, light, good-as-it-gets eastern powder.
The drive home was thick, but I was floating so high I never even noticed. I'm in love again.

I spent the better parts of yesterday and today traveling across upstate NY. Lots of new snow, but the temps were decent and the sky nearly clear.

The only problem was staying on my feet at the gas pumps - I'd say we had a steady 25mph wind. My ears would be numb by the time I got 10 gallons in the tank. On the plus side, I'd say the tailwind added a couple of mpg to my trip average.

It's good to be home.

Hope it's not too cold, I'd prefer not taking the tights to the 400k this Saturday. :D RA
During the day (300k), the headwinds were brutal out of the Northwest; we fought them all day. I wore bike shorts, legwarmers, bike bra and jersey, Campy Metal jacket, and Trek Anatomy gloves. The only thing I took off during the day were the heavy gloves. When the sun went down, it got real cold and I added my armwarmers. When I went out to finish up the 400k (2nd loop was 64 miles), I wore layers and layers on the top (bike bra, chest underarmer, ski jersey, wool jersey, Campy Metal jacket, rain jacket, and 2 pair of armwarmers) and two layers on the bottom (legwarmers and thermal tights w/ jerseys tucked in), wool socks over Channel Air socks, two balaclavas (wool and heavy one), three pair of gloves, and I still froze my butt off! At first (5 miles or so), I was warm. But even as much clothing as I had on, I started freezing (I heard it got down to around 35 degrees). My fingers and toes were hurting. Add to it, I couldn't stay awake. I was falling asleep on the bike. That was scary and I made a judgment call; I knew I couldn't make the control by the close time and I felt my safety was being jeopardized. I DNF'ed at 206 miles. :crap: :crap: Today, I feel like I had the crud beat out of me.

Nice going TCH! Now I'm jealous. Sounds like a wonderful night. I recall a similar experience night skiing in upstate NY, but not with snow that deep. It's an other-worldly experience skiing in a nighttime snowstorm.

This weekend we had warm and sunny days and hero corn snow. My legs are achy now after endless laps through the sping bumps. The time change is working out nicely too, with good sunlight all afternoon.

RA - you are hard core, sister! Wow that sounds like a super tough day. It also sounds like you did the right thing in the end. Glad you didn't fall asleep and fall over. That would have been a crappy way to end your ride. Recover well!

The end of this 400k is out in the middle of absolutely nowhere; no lights, very few homes, and up to where I stopped, I might have seen one or two cars. What made me know it was time to call it a day/night was when I "nodded" and trailed across to the opposite side of the road. That was a shaky feeling. We started at 5:00 a.m. Saturday and I stopped around 3:45 a.m. Sunday. After some sleep and getting warm again, I got home at 1:15 this afternoon. I delayed a drive to my parents (250 miles south) and plan on leaving at 4:00 a.m. now. I couldn't have drove 1/2 hour without pulling over for a nap. Good night... ;)
