Just purchased a CAAD 6 R5000 SI off ebay and have a few questions

Is it possible to install a Shimano crankset on a frame with a Cannondale SI BB by means of an adapter of some sort?

Are Hollowgram SI BBs the same as the BB30 standard?

Am I limited to using the Hollowgram SI cranks from Cannondale?

Excellent. Thanks.

On to sourcing parts for the build now

And BB30 to Shimano 24mm spindle adapters are simple, and made by several manufacturers.

I have two BB30 Cannondales (a CAAD9 and a CAAD10) with angular contact 6806 bearings and Wheels Manufacturing adapters (https://wheelsmfg.com/products/bb-crank-adapters/bb30-adapter-for-shimano-24mm-cranks.html) to enable use of Shimano 24mm cranks. Both bike/crank combinations work perfectly, smooth and quiet.

There are tons of different adapters available, as referenced any BB30 to shimano 24mm spindle adapter will do it.

However, not all adapters are created equal. I'd strongly suggest finding a thread together style adapter, sometimes called conversion bottom brackets, rather than the kind where it's just two parts pressed into the BB30 bearings.

The thread together type cost a bit more than the above mentioned type, but greatly reduce the likelihood of developing creaking. Praxis (https://praxiscycles.com/product/shimano-bb30-pf30-68mm-road/) and WheelsMFG (https://wheelsmfg.com/bottom-brackets/bb30-outboard/bb30-to-outboard-bottom-bracket-for-24mm-cranks-shimano-black.html) (along with many others, I'm sure) make such thread together adapters.

I think you're thinking of bottom brackets, not adaptors. The Wheels, et al BBs are very good things.

I'm allergic to adding another bit of something that's likely to add noises to a 'very likely to creak' system so lean towards one-piece solutions

If the frame already has the BB30 bearings in place probably it’s worth trying the BB30 to 24mm adapters out. If you get creaking you can always get a conversion BB.

If you get creaking you can always get a conversion BB.That's exactly the strategy I used with my two BB30 Cannondales. I took the easy, inexpensive route (Delrin adapters) and it worked for me. No creaking in either bike. When the OEM bearings wore down, I replaced them with angular contact 6806 bearings. Still creak free, including last night's big-ring hill repeats

Great suggestion. From the ebay listing it seems to be that the bottom bracket and the spindle are still on the frame.

However it seems to me that using the adapters will the bearings exposed to the elements.

The thread-together solutions from the likes of Rotor, Praxis and Token seem to be more weather resistant.

they are sealed cartridge bearings with washers over them. using adapters for 24mm won't let in any more dirt than staying bb30

Using a different style bb may cure noises, but won't be more weather resistant.
Either way, it's not an issue.

That’s weird that they left the spindle in the bike without the Si crank arms. Makes me wonder whether the bearings are seized to the spindle. Which could present an issue depending on whether one or both bearings are frozen to the spindle. Exercise caution when removing the spindle... you don’t want to mess up the c-clip that limits the medial position of a bearing and knock a bearing into the bottom bracket shell.

They probably just didn't know- both crank arms extract the same, probably just didn't realize they only had to extract one? That's what I'd assume I suppose.

And don't worry about damaging a c-clip, bb30 bearings almost always come with fresh ones.

Either way, I work at a C-dale shop and find those plastic spindle adapters pretty problem free, and they're lighter than a bb30-hollowtech II bottom bracket.

I concur with the thread-together solution. I found the praxiswork conversion bb to be superb. Being based in Singapore, you could consider elitecustom whom i got it from - https://www.elitecustom.sg/products/praxis-conv-bb-shimano-road-bb?_pos=8&_sid=c60352e59&_ss=r&variant=2143781453848
