View Full Version : 11/8" Stems that look good on 1" steerers? IE low profile clamp area

I have a couple steel bikes with 1" threadless steerers and have always had trouble finding stems that looked good with the skinnier tubes and steerer interface. Given that 1" threadless stems are pretty much extinct, are there any 11/8" stems folks have found that have a slim steerer clamp area and are not overly bulky in the profile that mesh with steel tubes. I have one titanium stem that works pretty well, but looking for other options. Cheers!

the simworks stems are a good option.

A bit heavier but almost any chromoly stem would look perfect. Sim works is a great option, as are other Nitto branded stems. Just use a clean shim (even one from Nitto).

I used a Ritchey C220 with a 1" steerer for a while and the profile was fairly slim.

Depending on where you need the bars, I like these. Retain that -17deg quill look, if they work for your necessary handlebar height.

I used a Thomson with a shim on an old bike with a 1” steerer and it looked fine.

Deda Superleggero is the best. If you need it in 130mm, check my classifieds listing. I have a 110mm I may let go also.

Easton EA70 looks fine for a cheap version. Deda superleggero or chromoly stems look that much better though.

1 1/8 Deda Superleggero stems are slimmer in both the clamp area and diameter of the stem. I find that they look nice with 1" forks.

I like the Deda superleggero stems a lot but always concerned about the exposed steer tube on a steel fork. This might not even be a concern with a bit of grease or paint but it always held me back from trying it out. Also not even sure if OP is using a steel steerer so maybe a non-issue.

What is your concern with the steel steerer? Seems to me like carbon is more susceptible to problems if the stem is not clamped on the right part of the steerer

This is a good point with exposure and potential rust. However, it is not an issue with a 1" fork, as he'll need a shim anyway.

I have a 1" steer-tube on one bike and really like the ebay special from Kalloy called the Uno or Uno 7. Sleek, light, cheap, etc. I replaced a Thomson with this to save some weight. I think might only be in black. Logos were easily removed with a bit of acetone.

Still requires a shim to fit 1" steer-tube.

With the Deda Superleg stems, do you have to use Deda bars as well. Curious why the went with a 31.7mm clamp other than to sell more handlebars....

i think the ritchey classic stuff can look pretty OK too with 1" steerer.

They're cross-compatible. Turns out the "real" spec is 31.75mm and most companies round up.

The Uno is available in silver, but with more limited choices in sizes/angles. Here's one example:

Search eBay for stems, "uno", then select silver for the color option.

Surface rust, I really doubt it would eat through a steerer, but it can get rusty and not look as clean. Totally forgot the shim would cover the spot any way!

If you're looking for a -17° stem, the Hunter Cycles Sprint stem is the most svelte stem around. It's not the lightest, but there's really nothing else out there that's quite as minimal. And you can opt for no logo.

I would check in with Earl Glazer Cycles for a custom stem that has that quill stem look. He built mine for a 1 1/8 steerer but I'm sure he could do it for your 1 inch stem. Does both fillet braze and lugged. Was pretty dang reasonable

This is one that I'm using on my 1" threadless setup. I had to use a very specific shim and spacer combination because these stems only come in 1 1/8". But after I got that worked out, I think it looks pretty nice.

Older FSA OS115 Stems have a lower stack height and are heavily CNC'd to look decent on a 1" threadless adapter.

Thomson X2 pretty good on a 1” steer tube, either steel or black.

Best stem for a 1" fork tube, small tube diameter frame? Look for a Syntace F99 stem, many were made in silver and black, true 1" low stack height fork tube clamp, no shim required, very light weight, small extension tube diameter and look right at home on a small tube diameter frame.

Bicyclerecyclery currently has a 105mm in black for $29.99 http://www.bikerecyclery.com/threadless-stems/

Syntace also makes a number of low stack height clamp, small extension tube diameter, 1 1/8" clamp stems that look perfect on small tube diameter frames.

I don't believe the Ebay "UNO" stems are made by Kalloy at all.
Might it be the same company that mimics Easton's products with names like "EC90"?

One way that such products can be much cheaper than the original manufacturer's products is the lack of US assets that are at stake when a liability claim might appear.
Not to mention that the manufacturing cost is lower when rigid QC requirements aren't having to be implemented in order to satisfy an insurance underwriter.

I agree with the Syntace stems, the Deda Superleggera look similar. I have one on my Merlin Extralight and it suits well.

The Uno 7 is also my choice. It's a popular weight weenie stem and can be ordered with no logos from AliExpress for a bit cheaper than eBay:

The Syntace on Bikerecyclery.com is for 1 1/8" steerer. The 25.4 is the handlebar clamp. A shim would be needed.

This is on an Innicycle conversion headset but it’s still an 1 ⅛ stem sitting on a 1” head tube. I tried all sorts of aluminum stems and spacers but they all looked wrong, this is the only production stem with a raise that looked right. If you’re looking for a -17 only there are more out there.

FYI - Syntace had a recall on a few of their stem models many years back. The issue was fixed and didn't affect all models but wouldn't want anyone purchasing a used or NOS model without that knowledge, just in case.

Another vote for Deda Superleggera stem. Its as slender as you can get for a modern stem, and looks fine on a steel bike as long as you don't mind black.
