That white and black + Masai Pegoretti is so beautiful...the grey one is incredible, too. And the white fixed....What a master.

Is this the year some folks tried too hard, though?

Again, many thanks.

very nice. some thoughts...

1) this is becoming like a car show. with 'concept bikes', lots of experimentation. nice.

2) paint is getting much more sophisticated. color palettes are becoming more rich. as builders are putting together 'show bikes' they're extending their craft to more of the bike--beyond frame, making complete bikes (which makes sense, from a lot of perspectives).

3) an atmo track frame with deep carbon rims and lots of black... @#%&!

4) track bikes are the new road bikes.

5) people are going to want this stuff when they see it, as a result the builders' crafts will expand--and likewise their cv/portfolio. more nice bikes. more sharing knowledge. more collaboration. more media.

6) is nahbs the second most important dissemination tool in the framebuilders tool kit, second only to the internet..? it would seem so. thanks don walker--big ups, full respect.

Thanks for the pics Ligero
.

Is that your '91 GTi 16v? I have the same exact car except in black. I even have a Techtonics Tuning exhaust in stainless with the high flow cat and a Borla muffler. Are you running the extra resonator on this? I debated whether to get this or just go with a straight pipe, but decided to opt for the quiter side.

Yes, it my 91 GTI 16v. I did not get the extra resonator because it is a second car and I use it for autocrossing so I want any extra HP I can get. I have a Bahn Brenner 16VG60 kit to go on next but I do not have fuel management yet.

Nick told me that there are just a few details on the UL frames that are not ready yet.

Just got back from the show. Very fun, seemed a bit larger than last year. Met ATMO for the first time, and made the big purchase of the day: one pair socks. Had a friendly talk with Dario in Italian. People were lining up for autographs. He apparently had a few beers at Montano Velo in Oakland last night. Oh, and I saw Kent Eriksen's frames up close and personal - truly exceptional welds.

the only bike that deserves any mention at this entire show is the clear coated richard sachs belonging to that douche-bag; the jerk. terrible horrible person, but richard made him an a ok bicycle. i saw it during my attempts to locate don ferris; archibald and i are on the hunt; and the whiskey flows wicked yet there's no sign of the shivering fool.

actually all of dario's bikes are perfect; which is normal cosidering the fact that he has built two times as many frames in his life as all the other exhibitors combined.

time for some pay per view and some push ups incase i see dwf tomorrow,

So, if it's such a great frame, where are the photos?

...and I was pretty much in agreement with your opinion of that jerk guy for a evening last week... Fortunately, his colleagues redeemed him in my eyes.

Good idea about the pay per view: Obtuse vs. DWF, Caged Death Match, could raise some coin around these parts.

Does Bruce Gordon have his own wing there? It looks like he brought his entire dossier.

A lot of fine-looking bicycles and an at least equal number of "what the...?" Lots of folks doing wacky things to carve out a niche, I suppose.

My two favorites would be the BG with the front rack (http://www.flickr.com/photos/72276612@N00/409461841/) and the Kirk with the front rack (from the gallery). Guess I have a front rack fetish.

I'll never buy into extended seat masts on carbon fiber bikes, and I'm even more skeptical of them on steel bikes, but they sure seem to be trendy.

No Peacock Groove?

This past Christmas I got Jan Heine's book the Golden Age of Handbuilt Bicycles on all the French constructeur bikes of 1900-1960. Well, if that was the Golden Age, this has to be the Platinum Age. We're awash with skilled artisans who are able to make a living by building bikes. Life is good! The only problem is how to choose.

As cool as the bikes were--and there was wall-to-wall bike pr0n, make no mistake--the best parts of the show were the people. Finally meeting atmo, Dave Thompson and The Jerk, seeing Dario again, meeting Joe Bell and listening to the likes of Sacha White and Whitney Moyer talk about their craft was intoxicating. The passionate enthusiasm and thoughtfulness of these people is nothing short of amazing: I am a mere poseur by comparison.

I kept coming back to three displays: this was the first time I had the opportunity of seeing a Richard Sachs in the flesh. The bikes are surprisingly elegant in appearance and yet there's so much more to them lurking just beneath the skin. Kind of like the man himself, I imagine. And if you ever get a chance to see The Jerk's bike, take a look on the underside of the bottom bracket. (Although why he wants to put an 80mm stem on that bike is mp squared!)

The craftmanship on the Vanilla bicycles is astonishing: every time you look at one of those bikes you notice a different detail and just smile. Or laugh out loud with delight. If you could distill the ideal of beauty--at least mine, anyway--and embody it in the form of a bicycle, it would sport a Vanilla headbadge.

Dario Pegoretti is pretty cool and so are his bikes. Through his work, he was able to prise a deposit out of my hands and that's no mean feat! His bikes are seriously fast and purposeful yet playful, complex and simple, at once familiar but nuanced enough to reward a long-term stewardship.

If you get the chance, attend next year's edition: you won't be sorry!
