View Full Version : Part Lug/Part Fillet Joints on CSIs

Some of the CSIs had joints which were part lugged/part fillet brazed such that one tube of the joint was fillet brazed and the other was lugged. I am unaware of any other builders using such a technique.

The specs of these bikes was not unusual and I was wondering what was the rational for this joining method. Was it lug availability for the size of the tubes which were used and if so, why go partial lug and not all fillet brazing?
Thanks,
bobscott

bobscott, others will come and post with more info, but if I remember properly those there the CSI models with 1 1/8" head tubes. The options were 1" head tube all lugs OR 1 1/8" head tube brazed with the rest of the bike lugged OR all brazed.

Nah it was done on the 1 inch head tubes too , they, Serotta needed to split the lug since it was ovalized to accomodate a Colorado Concept tube. They fillet brazed the split lug afterwards.

not totally correct-

my csi is one of "them" cross breed bikes- oh and it has a 1" ht

gt6267a what you are thinking of were the faux lugs- see Ozz's wonderful blue and white csi-

I THINK the csi's were done half and half due to the OS tubes and the shaping of the tubes- they are not totally round on my bike- so they wouldnt fit in a lug properly-

all I know is that my csi is a work of art-

My understanding was that it was done for a year or two because there were no lugs being made at that time to accomodate a 1.125" head tube....example shown below.

Two different eras. There's the faux lugs and then there's the mixed brazed. I have a mixed brazed CSi with a 1" HT. As Smiley points out, for these it's the tubing/lug mismatch.

Here are pixs of a Tommasini {???} I bought that has lugs and fillet brazing.
Nothing special for the geo. Bought it because it looked clean, loved the fork style and the work was well done.

Look in the red tommasini album here:

John Cherry, of Cherry Bikes in Lafayette, IN has been doing part lugs/fillet brazing for years, personally i think it makes a great looking bike, something different

the Serotta 30th anniversary frames were a mixed breed too. th only true lug on the frame is the BB shell. the head tube was actually machined to creat a "lugged look" but actually fillet brazed. it is one sweet riding machine too

Thanks for all the replies.
I like the look too but still wonder if that was the driving force for not using an all filletted joint?

But what is the other side here?

Is is visual or is there a functional, ease of assembly or other reason?

Framebuilders get bored performing repetitive tasks. ;)
